Description
This is a scene from the Nickelodeon show "Avatar" that I reconstructed with very extensive creative liberties (basically the only similarity is that these two characters meet), for those of you who don't know what this is. And if you don't, SHAME on you, because Avatar is a damn excellent show.I started with this image probably two months ago, and had to put it on hold constantly for extended periods of time, because of other work. I thought that once I'd graduate from highschool I'd also have a lot more free time. This did, in fact, turn out not to be the case at all. But I had vowed to do more original finished pieces like this, and here we go.
Software: Photoshop CS.
Larger version here , for those interested.

AND WORK IN PROGRESS! The works in progress are basically useless except for giving a little insight on how I personally work, but I doubt there's much to learn here...

Great artwork! I've been responsible for the Dutch dubbed version of the series, and it always amazes me how people get inspired to make such beautiful art.
Respect!

Great atmosphere. I am at book one, episode nine, so I don't know if this is from the show, though I am guessing it is. I don't want to know any more about it right now.

did you make first a pencil sketch? or it was totally on photoshop?
How can you have that acuracy level with the wacom tablet?? I need to know this!!

If you read the image description, there are some links to some progress shots of this image, the first of which is a pencil sketch. By now I sometimes do everything on the computer, without sketching on paper first, depends on what I feel like. I've had a tablet for 5 years now, you get used to it after a while haha.

That is quite possibly the greatest rendition of Koh I have ever come across. Monstrous, twisting, ugly, with an interesting touch on his face. You've quite possibly visually captured the character even better than the series did!
I can't remember if he had them in the cartoon, but I dig the eyes at the very top of his head. Just adds to that whole bizarre anatomy of his, haha.

I don't think he has those insect eyes in the show, but I'm actually not sure myself haha. I took some liberties with this piece though so I wouldn't be surprised if that's one of them.
Thanks!

Ok, so I'm sure the answer is no because it would be copyright infringement (or because you maybe aren't willing to whore your art), but could this possibly be made into a print?
I would LOVE to hang this in my dorm or something next year. This is amazing, and all of the official art is very...juvenile.

FabianMonk In reply to galvin9 [2009-01-09 18:05:05 +0000 UTC]
Yeah you guessed it, that would be copyright infringement, so no can do. This got printed in an issue of Nick magazine at one point but obviously that was okay cause it was sanctioned by the very creators. But if I were to go ahead and sell this for my own profit I might get my nuts sued off so not gonna happen, sorry.
Thanks for the kind words though!

I loved the show ^^
I think you depicted the scene very good.. okay maybe the surroundings arenΒ΄t the same but you definitely captured the mood and the light and spookyness and so on
a shame that itΒ΄s already over .. I heard they want to make a film with real persons but I doubt that this will be good oO

They should make an ANIMTED feature film, end of story.
Although I'd watch either one, haha.

I literally clicked on this and went "Oh Holy $#17!" I'd been reading webcomics rendered and written in styles ranging from poor to mediocre all morning, and this snapped me back into the level of creative inspiration, as opposed to docile observation.
Thank you, and keep making such beautiful work.

I really like the spirit world in Avatar, and the face stealer is one of the most interesting characters in my opinion, even though he only appears for a very short amount of time.
Thank you for this great pic Very well drawn and interesting.
