Description
Here's some more life drawing done from photo ref. I got the reference for the top sheet from , the reference for the bottom sheet was a gay erotic site which I won't be linking for obvious reasons... the photos on there had some pretty sweet lighting though...Done with mechanical pencil, HB lead, on size A4 paper.
By the way! Thanks for all the critique you guys sent my way about the last life drawing update. I know that I didn't implement all of them in this update (although in some cases it wasn't possible, for example if the whole figure wasn't even included in the ref), but I swear I haven't forgotten - real life drawing class tomorrow, so I'll be putting them to good use there.

One word: WOW!
Excellent. Movement, light, shading...

Wow, these are very excellent! I would use these as references to help me in my artwork. I hope that's alright?

I'm fine with that, but you won't be doing yourself many favors if you use my drawings as reference - it's better to draw from life directly, aka visit a life drawing class, or if that's not an option, use photos, like I did here. Photos are ridiculously easy to find on the internet, DeviantArt's search engine alone is great. Then there is Google Image search, etc. etc.
Like I said, I'm okay with you using these as reference, but I don't see the point if you could just use photos just as easily instead.

Thank you! Yeah, normally I'll watch and sketch people around me *I find that the more experience I get with real life, the better I'll be able to draw the human body, but that's just me, eh* But I like to be able to get as many resources as I can. And the search engine on here is awesome for this kind of thing! So are magazines, although they aren't as realistic sometimes, but it's better than nothing sometimes haha. Thank you again!

I'm very interested in your technique. I love the cross hatching and the shading on the top left sketch is AMAZING! do you put down light pencil first or do you no longer have the need for construction lines. Also what pencil do you use?
π: 0 β©: 1
FabianMonk In reply to spencertoons [2007-10-30 01:02:22 +0000 UTC]
For these I used a mechanical pencil, HB lead with 0.5 width. I use that for the bigger life drawings too, but sometimes I use a much thicker mechanical pencil for larger areas.
And I most definitely still have the need for construction lines, haha, I'm still relatively new to this game, or at least nowhere close to where I want to be. You can't really make those lines out that well because I took these shots with a digital camera, and then bumped up the contrast. But yeah, I always lay down some pretty light and rough construction lines first and then move on to the shading.

This is stunning. I really like the shading effects that you did here and there, you seem to have captured them perfectly here.
Lovely job overall with the poses and everything. I love how well you did the female's back here and the muscles here and there as well.

Using photos? I should try that. We've only ever had very old men in our life drawing class. Only this semester have we had a young man, but we've only had him model once. I wish my life drawings looked as nice as these. I like how you put all the shading in the torso, but still suggest the rest of the body.

FabianMonk In reply to tiamatthefreak [2007-10-30 01:12:45 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I use photos as an additional study. I realize these are all models with more or less idealized bodies, but heck. I want to be able to draw a wide range of figures, and since we are more likely to get the non-model types in the real life drawing class, why not!
Thanks!

top left and bottom right are absolutely fantastic
i particularly like the lighting on the face of the guy in the bottom right. it's very well done.
I'm trying to get some life drawing going for my portfolio for sheridan, but there is no such thing as real life drawing in nova scotia, and people keep slapping my wrists when i try to use photo refs
your work makes me feel that it can't really be that bad to use photos.

Well if you really have no way of attending a real life drawing class, then photos are better than nothing, in my opinion. But they are no true substitute, so if you're trying to build a portfolio... well it would be kinda hard to attend a life drawing class if there really isn't one, but it would be better.

yeah it's actually the most mind boggling thing, the only place that offered life drawing around here stopped offering due to lack of interest, yet halifax has one of the fastest growing art scenes in canada right now. I've tried the art college, they don't offer a continuing education course in it and won't allow me even to pay just to go sit in on their classes (which is totally lame)
i'm close to just paying my friends to stand around naked for me
or hobos
hobos will probably do it.

Hobos are a good bet. The models you'll get in college probably won't look much different anyways...

Aah, semantics... perhaps anatomical studies might be a better name for them? Ehehehe. In any case, the end result is quite lovely, the balance of darks and lights described the forms nicely, I really like the intensity of the shadow on the lower right figure.

Nice, but it's not life drawing, if you use photo reference.
What does it matter? Well, it does. If you draw from a photo, the transition from 3d to 2d has been made for you. You don't draw volumes anymore, but flat shapes. That's easy, for one, and it takes your personal vision from your drawings. If you draw from 3d and have to find a translation for the volumes you see with your two eyes, then something interesting happens: you CREATE a new form.
True life drawings are wonderful, because they are alive with this artistic creation. You photo-reference drawings are well executed, but somewhat sterile. Every craftsman could do drawings that look just like yours. There is no personal handwriting in them, no dynamic in the linework.
I strongly recommend you to stop using photo reference for LEARNING. Use the for professional work, if time is an issue or perfection (=sterility). But if you draw for fun or to get better, do not draw from photos. Draw from life.

Sorry if that previous comment of mine came off a little blunt and pissed off. I just re-read it, and that was not my intention. Thanks definitely for the in depth explanation, but I can assure you that I am well aware of the things you mentioned. Which is why I don't only draw from photos. Like I said, these are just in addition, when I feel like doing some studies.
I disagree that studying from photos is no good for learning - in my opinion every study is an improvement, however slight. I do agree though that photos are no substitute to real life. But then again, we already knew that didn't knew we.
