AmTrak P42DC #150 idles while passengers board the Southwest Chief at around 6:40 AM in Garden City, KS, westbound for La Junta, CO, Trinidad, CO, then eventually Albuquerque, NM, Phoenix, AZ, and ultimately, Los Angeles, California. Helping along are P42DC #159 and P42DC #200. In the left background, BNSF GP35u #2405 idles on a siding next to the mainline.Edit: Updated the base image. Noise removed, colors adjusted, and sharpened considerably to correct for some lens aberrations.

That roofline and road number make me think 2405 might be a rebuilt GP30.

Yep, it definitely is. They had a large handful of them running around for awhile until they decommissioned them a few years back. I found a couple dozen on their deadlines back in 2010 -->

Nice shot. Pictures taken at evening are always softer, warmer? I'm not sure how to describe it.
But tell me, please, why this passenger train needs so big (3 units) locomotive?

It's a mid-transcontinental train, going between Chicago and Los Angeles. So it requires a large passenger capacity, as well as baggage and freight. Usually it averages two engines instead of three.
But this was also taken in the early morning.

Wanna know how to start a fight between Amtrak foamers? Tell them that engine is technically a P42DC-9 or 9-P42DC. Pick one or the other, and let the fun begin. It was a lot more fun with the P40's. There you had P40DC, P40DC-8, 8-P40DC, AMD-103, and Dash 8-40BP, 40BP-8, and a slew of other names. That was always a good fight to watch.
But regardless of what you call them, theyre all crap. They look cool, but run like crap. Cram an EMD 710 in there, then we'll talk.

I failed to mention that this is the Southwest Chief. It's a little longer than the average commuter-size AmTrak train. In fact, I'd say most of the ones we see courtesy of jdawg in the Chicago area are half the size of this one. It's kind of a long bastard, since it tends to carry at least two mail cars and about four baggage cars per train (not that that's a lot of dead weight to pull, but you know how AmTrak is ).

I've heard the same thing from a conductor or two on the power issue. The four-axle traction isn't the greatest either from what I gather.
This is why EMD would be better suited designed the passenger stuff, while GE concentrates on shelling out it's cookie-cutter freight crap.
