Description While it's true that BNSF's Topeka maintenance yard helps restore and repair damaged, broken, and defunct locomotives and return them to revenue service, it's also home to the deadlines for the company, and is also where old locomotives go to "die". Think of it as "hospice care". And that's what this batch of locomotives is here for (except for that gawdy CEFX leaser C44).

If I could buy one of those GP30's. I would send it to a tourist line near my home town. The preserve old locomotives like SP 2472.

If the remains to the left of the Dash-9 was a locomotive, then the buzzards have gotten to at least one of them already...

These aren't exactly the scrap yards. These are the maintenance facilities, and more often than not, they're actually in for rehab/rebuild work. Only about 1/3 of the stuff that comes through eventually ends up on the dead lines to the east.

Some of the oldest units there are pushing 45 years, though most were built in the 70s.

It seems a bit inappropriate to have such beautiful, blue-sky lighting on the dead line... Most of the dead line shots my German colleagues take at the "Bender" are cursed with heavy, overcast skies that seem much more fitting for watching beautiful, old (and often not so old) locomotives go to die...

Think of it as moving to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the U.S. versions.

Service. BNSF does a lot of contract service work for a bunch of the leasing companies around the area.
