Description
I purposely left this uncropped for the fact that it looked bad when I did.I decided to head up to the BNSF Maintenance yard to see what they might have in stock, and it was pretty impromptu at the time. I'm glad I did. When I walked over the Branner Trafficway viaduct, I couldn't hardly believe my eyes.
These two large strings of B23-7s sit dead in the yard on separate lines, for who knows what reason. It looked to me like they'd all just been repainted at first, but then I noticed some wear on the last few, and realized they weren't in for paint. My guess is they might be retiring them soon.
My count is that there's at least 25 there, probably closer to 30. All of them were former AT&SF units, and some even still kept the ATSF road letters, along with the ATSF billboard scheme.
Other images from this yard include a Warbonnet Dash 8 and the famous Beep .

sweet love the torn apart engine in the bottom right, makes me wonder how they took it apart without beating up the paint or spilling anything on it...

They most likely took the hood off before removing the prime mover, at which point they just used a large shop crane to do it. You'd be surprised at how compartmentalized most American diesel locomotives really are.

Where does the rear door in BNSF 4246 (The center ATSF unit) lead?
Shame...

Based on where it sits, I believe it'd be access to dynamic breaks and the radiator, but who knows? These things are almost twice my age.

One other question, what kind of locomotive is that in the foreground?

There's usually a handful here, especially the old ATSF units.

Are they repowering those or what?

Some are getting new prime movers, others are getting big work done to various parts. This is a full-service facility, so they could realistically build a whole new unit from scrap parts.

Well, good luck getting into it. I shot all those from an overpass. Everything else is pretty much off limits.

Pry legal reasons, heck, two guys on top of a Box car, trespassing in a yard, got Shocked form Overhead wires, they sued Amtrak and NS, and won.

Oh yeah. Methinks they're all retired now though. I think this was the deadline for them.
I'm trying to get caught up with some material so I"m not behind anymore. I don't think it's working.

I have Photoshop CS in a full (semi)legal copy. I love it. Mainly just adjustments to brightness/contrast and highlights/shadows. I tyr to keep my adjustments to a min, and force myself to account for lighting and whatnot at the camera first.

Yeah. I'm kinda wondering if these aren't deadlines afterall. They don't really "end" anywhere, but I see more old locomotives on them than not.
