Description
I swear my titling is getting ridiculous. The Great Plains Transportation Museum in Wichita, KS has a small handful of rail rolling stock from days gone by, including a nice ATSF Pacific and this gorgeously fairly-well kept ATSF FP45 #93. Here she sits, cleaned up, restored, and on static display right on top of the viaduct over Douglas Ave. in downtown Wichita. Behind her is an old ATSF caboose.
UPDATE: This shot was featured on the cover of the railroad classifieds magazine "Sterling Rail". A finished image of it can be seen here --> [link]
I didn't get paid for it, but it was completely random and out of left field. I have a physical copy that will be framed and hanging in my living room soon, and it's also on certain websites as banner ads (RR picture archives had one up on their forum, thanks Sully).

Love the shot. Not sure if you are aware of the history of this engine or not, but this engine was originally numbered 103 and by 1970 it had been renumbered to 5943. It was in that numeration that this engine led the very last westbound San Francisco Chief out Chicago's Dearborn Station on April 30th, 1971. So too, shall it lead my HO scale San Francisco Chief.

At the time, I wasn't aware of that, but I've been able to be brought up to speed on it since then, thanks mostly to Facebook groups and TrainOrders.com.

Short of going to the museum itself, I can't really get access to it (that I know of). When I get another chance to run down there (it's 3 hours away from the KC area), I'll try to see what I can do.

I'll be waiting. Just submit it to The-Caboose-Hub . I'll make sure it gets in.

Because of the wide variety of my photos every now and then someone asks me if I have photos of everything and I can honestly say I'm not even close... but I'm not sure they believe me.... the FP45 cowl unit is one more.

I wouldn't exactly call this unit 'gorgeously kept'. (fading and peeling paint, missing headlamp, scuffed pilot, etc.) But I'm glad that she's still here at all.

You obviously haven't seen her in her previous states of existence.

Good God, look at the swiss cheese in the carbody.

It was worse at one point. They're working on finishing up the carbody sometime this year or next.

Ah I see then. It's a work in progress. Do they have a gryalight for the top of the cab?

I hear they're looking for one, but they're hard to come by. Those aren't holes in the carbody, but rather just peeling paint (not that that's any better ).

Restored? Looks like she could use another restoration...at least her pilot and the bridge of her nose do.

She was in far worse shape than this before. At one point, there was no nose door at all, and paint on one side was all but rusted off.

I'm glad she's healthier now.

From that title I expected it would be carrying a lance, or maybe a coat of chain mail.
