Description
This is the first version of this idea. Obviously the fairy was supposed to be the center of the image, with the spider and the action secondary elements. Although it came out pretty close to what I had in mind at the time, I realized that this picture didn't do such a desperate, struggle-filled situation justice, and the spider looked a little kind and too bulbous. So, I forced myself to stare at it and think about it in the hopes that another version showed up--and, on one of those rare occasions in my "art," it happened. That one is Fairy in the Spiderweb II, which I will post in a few days.So, does she get the wand and smite Mr. Spider? Or is she doomed?
Sweets-B wrote a short story inspired by these "Fairy Vs. Spider" pictures. It's a fun (and tragic!) read by a Deviant with some good writing skill. Check it out here . I'd be tickled pink if she'd do more. Being part of this one was lots of fun. I have my own theories about where this story will go, but I don't know if I will ever draw and put up more from this series. Seeing/reading another's well-made interpretation was refreshing,...
(Edit, Oct 9, 2009)
...And it's even more refreshing when someone else pitches in. In this case, Cindy (a.k.a. ~reacherfan ) has also written a story for this. Her story is posted here . It's another quick, fun read that highlights Cindy's particular theme and interest in the situation. Thanks, Cindy!
Enjoy!

Oh how did I miss this I could hope she escapes buuuut nah
just before she can reach her wand...the spider wraps it's silk sticky web over her face blinding her...causing her to panic and lose sense of where the wand is.

Tap the leaf and let it roll down into your hand, little fairy.
And next time, pay more attention to where you're going. lol.

I tend to never kill the females, although living in such distress doesn't really seem like too grand a prospect either... Thanks!

Oh come on, people! Spiders are not evil! They just need to eat every once in a while!
*squishes spider*
Anyhoo. I think the spider is perfect... it's very menacing in it's non-evilness, because you can hate something evil and want it to die... but how can you hate a creature filling it's most basic needs to survive?
like Jaws... Sharky was NOT evil! He was just hungry! And probably a lil' p.o'd at the end because they kept trying to kill him.

Yes, that's an interesting point of view you have, particularly about Jaws. Still, when you are on the business end of that mouth of teeth, it's hard not to think evil of the finned menace... Thanks!

I like the tears. Tears give some indication of hope. No one would bother crying if there was no hope left...it takes too much energy. I love the emotion!

That is a very interesting viewpoint on tears and crying--one that I would never have understood were it not for a good wife and some good friends. Thanks for the comment!

Spiderweb
by Stanislaw Baranczak
The spiderweb, symmetrical
death;
is still
a sail stretched from leaf to leaf,
sifting sunrise (letβs wax
poetic), a thatched roof
straining stars some August night (thereβs
no better), a wintry
pattern (anaesthetic) on the glass;
suddenly:
the splayed hand that slapped your face;
the wheel they broke you on; the rifle
target bearing your hunched shape;
ripples on the water where you drowned;
your solar plexus radiating
pain; the sight on a fighter plane
nosediving the road where you shield
your head with other refugees; a windowpane
meshed with cracks where your eyes had been;
the spiderweb, concentric rings; pain
grows this way; centrifugal rays;
a dead star decays this way;symmetrical death;
harmonious disgrace;
tidy degradation;
you only feel it brush your face.
βTranslated from the Polish by Stanislaw
Baranczak and Clare Cavanagh

I think the spider looks more like a eight-legged owl. It looks good, alright, but I find it rather disturbing, that it only has two eyes...
(sorry, if I'm not the first one to say that.)

faile35 In reply to frrrnka [2006-09-24 17:47:59 +0000 UTC]
No, you're not the first one to comment on this spider. My wife's first words, upon seeing it, were: I think he looks like "Snufflupagus." That is why I did a second one, in which the spider is a bit more menacing...
"Eight-legged owl" is a new one, but it certainly fits. He does have a row of eyes above the two big ones, but oh well.

Of course! I was going to go through my stuff this weekend and choose another few to submit, but if you would like to do it for me...
Feel free. I'm trying to keep it at a once/week submission of 2-4 pics. Tell me if that's a wrong move, though.

I'll specify some first. I want to put the five "pets" oil paintings up next. In Prince's Rein, By Hunter's Beads, In Rustler's Ropes, To Marshal's Heel, and By Raider's Bonds. I'll send the links to you later tonight.
