Description

Here's the second of the images from 2020 to be posted. It's not on the "What I Did During the Pandemic of 2020" image because it wasn't quite completed when I put that together.

This is my version of Scylla, influenced by a great number of things. The storyline in question took place in 493 BCE - 490 BCE, and so for Scylla to be kicking around centuries after the days of her legend and still threatening ships in the Straits meant that I had to come up with more mythology in her regard. Essentially, she got stronger and bigger over the centuries after she was transformed by Circe (according to Hyginus), even though many heroes and cultures tried to eliminate her. After the divine Herakles and Hermes both had a go at her and were partially successful, the Tyrrhenians and Karchedonians (a.k.a. the Etruscans and the Carthaginians) also accomplished the deed, but each time she just grew back in another couple of years, and, rather hydra-like, bigger than before, swelling beyond her "cleft" to command the entire span of water. Her great size made her somewhat lethargic however, so that ships could pass by unmolested (avoiding Charybdis on the opposite shore) when she was sleeping. But one-in-eight ships would awaken her, and she'd consume as many poor souls as she could get before the ship sank or passed out of range.

Circe had also vanished long ago, taking with her the knowledge of the accursed potion that had transformed the poor, beautiful naiad into the beast. Only the Gray Sisters could provide information about it, but unfortunately, they, too had vanished centuries before. However, the Gray Sisters had been informally replaced by a new sisterhood called the Neograiae, and these three each possessed a miniature piece of Circe's Cauldron (a huge bronze krater) that had been melted down and cast into smaller versions. The heroes of the storyline found the potion that had transformed Scylla, retrieved the elements necessary to make it, and sought out the Neograiae to brew it in their three cauldrons. The elements included water from the great rivers of the Underworld among other things, and she had to be slain and again rejuvenating before the potion could be applied. But, at long last, after centuries of torture and destruction, the naiad was restored back to her original form and state.

Also, mostly to feel like I'm really getting back into the swing of things, I'm including a modified version of my normal disclaimer below.

Note: This is a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.
