Description Pen and ink. 13.5" x 18" (34 cm x 43 cm). About 40 hours work.

This is my entry into the "Dragon's Domain" contest at *DocRedfield 's *monstersandmaidens group. I haven't drawn a dragon for a while, and I was hoping for an image of one to pop into my head, although, as usual, it was the girl who popped in there first. Astute observers of my work will recognize the look on the girl's face--"Hyde's Bride" wears it [link] , as does the chick on "Digital Doodling 1" [link] , along with the awakening aerobicizer in "The Mouse Trap" [link] , and they're joined by lots of damsels throughout my gallery. For that matter, you don't have to be very "astute" to notice the trend...

Regardless, there are some great entries in that contest, so if you haven't seen them, I'd encourage you to check them out.

Next up is the follow-up to "The Mouse Trap."

Enjoy!

I found this while looking for a pick for my fantasy football team. Then instead of spending the evening working on my draft strategy, I spent the whole night going down the rabbit hole of your work. It's amazing stuff thanks for sharing it. Let me know if you would prefer I don't use your drawing for my team. I would totally understand.

Plot twist: when the dragon is done with her she won't be a damsel anymore, but she will be alive and at least mostly in one piece.

Very cool. I'm loving all your work, man. Great stuff!

Just out of curiosity, what is your rate?

Thanks a bunch! I'm glad you've found something enjoyable in there.

As far as my rate goes, if you're referring to my rate of production on these ink drawings, it's been about one per week for many years save for a single month in which I blasted out close to 30 of them at slightly lower quality (the original Rats in the Cellar), though I haven't done a strictly ink piece for a few years. If you're referring to the rate I charge for a drawing like this, well, it's $0 because I don't really do work for others--my own mind is so full of imagery that needs to get out that to draw another's idea just for some paltry dollar figure is like putting a price on my sanity and my life. I've done it in the past, but not for years, and I don't plan on changing that anytime in the near future. Note that that's only how I see it with my own art--I certainly don't mind other artists (people who are at least as capable as I with any medium) making $$$ for drawing others' ideas.

Regardless, thanks for the interest!

Thanks! By and large, the face/expression of the woman in the picture is what is most important to me. I'm glad you like it.

Yes, if you have a dragon, he need a healty and correct nutrition. You can feed him with sheeps, cows or whatever, but the best is to throw in some maiden (still alive, i take that point for granted) from time to time... not too often, because if you feed maidens too often, he will refuse other food and will demand only maidens... that's too expensive over the time... but after a cow, a sheep... a maiden, followed by a sheep, a cow, a horse... a maiden again... is a good sequence. You dragon will thank you with shiny scales and eyes, will spit well hot, long flames and get a overall healty condition!

ever read "dragon's bait" by vivian vande velde? there was an interesting line it it, where the dragon (in human form at the time) points out to alys that dragons don't ask for maidens, they are offered maidens, and generally by old men with power. when she expresses some doubt, he adds "Is a governor likely to be a maiden, or a king?"

this image reminded me of that book for some reason, perhaps related to my whole "thoughts on distressed women in art" schtick i've been on of late.

Good Lord! If I were an "old man in power," I'd be handing over the other "old men in power," and keeping all of the maidens for myself...

Er... yeah. I guess that doesn't do anything but confirm the argument in question, does it...

I'll have to check out the book you mentioned. A story on the theme that comes to mind is "Portrait of a Hero," by Lawrence Watt-Evans (from the hardback fantasy collection Once Upon a Time ), which i thoroughly enjoyed.

And thanks!

it's a short read (can't be more than 100 pages or so); i read it back in junior high and then re-read it a few years ago. the one you mentioned sounds interesting, too--i'll have to check it out

Clearly the best of all, technically and visually, though it lacked some concept IMO. The expression is excellent, i do not mind it was used before.

Very beautiful. Have you ever thought of mounting down one of your pen and ink drawings and coloring it with transparent oils. Looks like it would be well suited for that.

On the other hand, they look very good just as they are in black and white.

Your work is simply amazing Jeff.

Thank you! My brain really doesn't approach mixed media well. All the "Demon's Due" stuff that is done in mixed ink and graphite I still have to force--my mind tends to see things in either graphite OR ink, but not both. Mixing oil with anything else isn't even in the same galaxy, I'm afraid... However, I do at times see an image done twice--once in ink and a second time in oils, as is the case with "The Enemy of Angels" ( [link] and [link] ). I'm also thinking I might like to see "In Prince's Reins" done in ink or graphite, although it'll be a while before I could ever seriously move on such a thing.

Thanks again!

Jeff1966 In reply to faile35 [2008-02-22 03:58:12 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking you could approach it much the same way you did this picture [link] Except in a more traditional way.

Of course you would have to use a set of ALL transparent oils, and maybe a little white for highlighting. Opaque oil, no matter how thin, doesn't usually look good.

I've tried it a few times myself, but I hate the mounting process. It's been so long, I'm not sure if I even remember how to do it. LOL Old age sucks.

Just thought you might get a kick out of trying it, and as a side effect, I'd get to see it.
