Description
Queen Eirwen - One of my “Fairy Queens” series. The fairy queen of winter, Eirwen is 18” tall and has a wire and cloth armature over which a cotton skin has been stretched and then needle sculpted. Her wings of iridescent white lame have a span of 12 1/2” and are also wired and have faceted crystals attached. Her dress is a silver embroidered net robe over a white satin gown edged with sparkly hand crocheted “fur.” She has a beaded ice crown and necklace to finish her outfit. I really love the wings...they have beautiful negative space.
How do you make them? Or is that a secret?
Anyway, this is a really beautiful piece. Keep up the awesome work!

Thank-you! No secret, first I draw a wing shape that I like; I actually keep a file of these so they’re ready when I need them. Next I take cloth covered wire and paint it the color I want. When the paint is dry I shape the wire using my drawing as a pattern. Next I cover one side of the wire lightly with glue and place it on a piece of sheer fabric; I’m very partial to metallic silk organza for this step. I place the wing between wax paper and put some heavy books on top. When the glue is dry I cut the excess material away from the wire. The next step is usually to draw on the veins with dimensional paint but I skipped that one this time and just added some crystal beads to the ends.

That's awesome. I'm sureyou have to be very careful when you cut them out.
I think it's a great idea to have a bunch of wing patterns stashed away. I do that alot too...I'll make a little crochet thing or a small drawing and save it until I'm working on something more substantional.

Thank-you! I actually describe how I make wings in the interview I did for inchworm. [link] . These were made the same way but I just glued crystals on the twisted ends. And thank-you for the comment on her face! Here in N.C. snow is a rare and joyous event!
