Description
I made this when I was trying to make my own avatar but the only tutorials I could find were for Image Ready. I think I'll also do a watermark one because I found the same problem there too.PLEASE READ:
This tutorial, does not work with photoshop CS or CS2! To animate something if you have CS or higher you need to use IMAGE READY. If you have Image Ready, use it to begin with, it is much easier to animate.
I have a tutorial for Image Ready here: [link]

I made an avatar, but how do I get it on dA? I used paint...

FantasyFan08 In reply to zeros-nettop [2008-07-24 12:14:50 +0000 UTC]
First you need to make sure it's under 15KB - which since It's was made in paint, I'm sure you're okay on that... Because I usually use paint to make it smaller - and 50x50 pixels.
Then you get on the site click on the arrow next to your screen name at the top of the page and select "Edit Settings and Profile" and it will take you to all of your profile information where you can decide what you want to be on your page and what you do or don't want viewed publicly (ie: email address, your name, where you live, etc...) On the side bar, under "Public" select "Identity" and here is where you can upload your avatar, as the page says, it may take some time for it to show up because of image caching or something.
I hope that helps, if you need anymore help, let me know.

Do you mean MS Paint?

FantasyFan08 In reply to skittles-person [2008-04-07 20:10:09 +0000 UTC]
MS paint does not have an animation tool because it is a very basic software. GIMP (which is a free download) may have it. Also, from the Adobe website, you can download a 30 free trial of Photoshop CS3 and it will also download image ready - which is an animation software. I've done photoshop trials and as long as you keep the trial downloaded onto your computer, the trial for image ready will never run out.

Canvas as in a new layer on the same file or a whole new file? To make a new layer you can either go to your layers pallet (which should be on the right side of your screen by default) and look for a tab that when you hover over it it should say "new layer" - I think mine looks like a pice of paper with the corner folded. Or, you can go to your top menus (file, edit, etc...) and there should be one that says "Layers". Click on that to make it drop down and there should be an "Add a new layer" option.
To open up a whole new project, it's as simple as "File > New" and there you can coustomize the size that you want.
I hope this answered your question.

No, I'm sorry. I have played with GIMP a little, but not enough to know how to animate. Have you tried searching for a GIMP animation tutorial? If there isn't one, I know that you can go to the Adobe website and download a free trial of Photoshop CS and it comes with Image Ready, which is an animation program. Photoshop has a 30 day trial, but as long as you don't remove it from your computer, Image Ready is yours to keep, if I remember correctly.

When I go to 'Save for the Web' there is no area that says to Animate. I looked and looked and there's nothing. What could be wrong?

I have Photoshop 7.0 and followed your directions but there is absolutely no Animation button to press anywhere in the Save to the Web section !! It's soOOO frustrating. Here is a Screen Capture so that you can see for yourself [link]
I wanted see how it worked to animate in some other area besides Image Ready and your idea sounded great about animating using Save for the Web. I can't believe after doing the entire tutorial that that one detail prevented me from completing the tutorial

Yeah, looking at yours and mine, I notice that yours says 'save' and mine says 'okay' How did you bring the box up?
I know that adobe changes a lot with their programs. I have photoshop elements 4.0, so with the release of Image Ready, they may have removed that feature. That's all I can think of.

Yeah, you're probably right about them removing the feature. I opened it by clicking, ' File and Save for the Web'
Well, thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate it. Your tutorial was terrific.I just couldn't finish it in Photoshop, grrrrr

Photoshop hates me... I don't really know how to use it now. O.o I've never really played much with it only paint! Paint is easy to me you can't do much with it. Well I did all you said and it worked but for some reason when I'd copy and paste it onto the 50X50 pix thing it wouldn't put the whole picture up there when I know the picture was scaled right. So I got corners of pictures instead of a whole picture! So it made me mad. I gave up. I'll have to try later when I'm not so frustrated. But yeah! Your stuff works its just my computer and photoshop hates me! *runs away crying*

Photoshop just takes some time to get used to. My school offers a class and I took it. Also, just looking at other deviant's tutorials on how to do certian things in photoshop has helped a lot.
Once you learn how to use it, even on a basic level, it's a great resource. I'm still trying to figure out mine because I was taught how to use CS and I have elements.

Yeah. Even though CS is so much more advanced, the class was really helpful and you can basically do amost everything in elements as you can in CS, excluding some tools and settings.

So, when you hit 'Save For Web' nothing pops up?
That's odd.
How about trying the keyboard shortcut. I have elements 4.0 and this is the shortcut on my software. Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S
If the window itself isn't opening, then it sounds like you might have an issue with your software or computer. I reecently had an issue where when I opened the color picker, the entire program locked up. I took a few things off my computer, cleaned out the drive and it worked.
You can also always go to adobe.com and send them a technical support request via email (don't call, they charge you)
But if your problem is not what I think, could you please explain further? I'll try to help you as best as I can.
