Description Before you say anything, worst tutorial shading pic ever!! Ill fix the pic later, i just want to get this up Ok so asked me how I shaded so I decided to do it in a tutorial.

In case you can't read my handwriting, this is what it it says:
(this is step 1 btw) Identify where the light and dark spots will be (draw the lines don't write the words, unless you forget easily... Which would be me) (it doesn't say that last part on the pic or this up ahead--->>>). I use arcs to shade now (see this picture [link] ) I think it looks pro that way XD

Step 2: shade!! There are several different types of shading here are 3

Burn/dodge (aka lighten/darken): if you use photoshop, gimp, Corel... Or anything like those you will probably have a burn/dodge tool. I used to use burn/dodge tool all the time and the way I shaded with it was: after coloring (for burn) go to the darker area of your subject (corner, area away from the light, wrinkles ect.) and set the burn tool to the correct degree of darkness and layer your way out to the lighter area. (for dodge) go to the lighter area of your subject (edge, hair, highlights) and layer your way to the darker area. You have to use burn/dodge on the same layer as you colored, otherwise there will be NO affect. Now I know you can smudge/blend your shading together to give it more of a smooth look, but more on that in step 3.

Paintbrush (aka sketching tool, pen tool, pencil tool.... This tool has several different names depending on your art program don't get this one mixed up, it's the tool you draw with). Each and every art program has this tool, from paint to photoshop. This is how I shade now: (for darkening) after coloring take the color you used and darken it (not too much, but enough to see it) and in the dark areas you identified, color it in, you can layer if you want or leave it simple (for simple see "art trade with rynnlight" in my gallery) (for lightening) take the color you colored with and lighten it (again not too much, but enough to see it) and in the light areas you identified, color it in. You could also use the blend tool in step 3 with this style of shading

Pencil (this is for traditional artists): for just a regular pencil, artist pencils, or colored pencils.

Regular pencil: pressure in darker places (not too much) and going over it several times, making it lighter as you go out and around (if your subject has muscles like my wing in the picture).

Artist pencils: use softer pencils in darker places. Use pencils like 2H, 4B and HB. (for darker to lighter) 4B first then HB then 2H. You can also use pressure and go over several times.

Colored pencils: pressure and repetitive strokes. use softer pencils in darker places and darker pencils in darker places and vice versa.

Step 3 blend
EDIT: I figured out how to blend, after layering your shading take the smudge tool (or if you are a traditional artist, your finger or paper towel) and blend in straight strokes from the darkest area to the lightest (or if you are highlighting lightest to darkest area) until your picture is blended neatly and smoothly. this Takes a lot of practice, if you want to see what I mean by "blend your shading" go to this picture --> [link] like I said it takes a lot of practice and this is the only blended shading picture I've ever finished so I'm still working on it.

Hopefully this helps anyone and everyone, it took way longer than I expected, I'll put a better picture later I just want to get this up.
