You've just improved so much over the past few months! ITS AMAZING! Firstly lets talk background. I personally love the way you did it! Blaze's zone looks very good and it blends very smoothly into sonic's territory. The shading you did with the grass and hills is great with this! It gives a lot of depth and is flat out awesome. Shadow's section though, seems... not as strong. It's great it really is, but by comparison, it seems more... flat. There's a definate foreground and background, but it seems to be missing a mid section that the other two have. The cityscape itself is also not very diverse. The buildings are a lot of the similar pattern over and over. Which, isn't a horrible thing (a lot of city sections look that way) but for the sake of giving a better view of the world around them, perhaps make some skyscapers, high rises, or even a building being built. Some off into the distance too to help with the depth. There also could have been a smoother transition into shadow's city section. Perhaps make the grass turn into weeds peeking through a sidewalk crack? Rather than its abrupt stop.

The characters themselves, each are well drawn in your style respectively. Blaze looks especially nice (VERY NICE flames) the only thing I could recommend there is to maybe have sonic in a less... stiff pose (does that make sense?) or perhaps have a blue streak that he's known for running through the pathways.

Overall GREAT job! I can't wait to see how far you've come in another few months and keep up the great work!

Thank you!!
Sorry it took me a really long time to reply..

Yeah.. I don't really like Shadow's background, I'm going to edit it based on the critiques I've received.
You have some really amazing ideas, I never even thought of weeds and buildings being built! Thanks!!

I thought about putting a blue streak behind sonic after I uploaded the picture. I have to remember to do that. I had also thought of redrawing, or at lease fixing the characters.

Thank you so much for the advice!! It really helps

I am so proud of all the progress you've made just in the past couple of months~! I feel like you're my little sister, working her way up in the art world. I shall keep my critique as positive and constructive as I can.

As far as your anatomy goes, well, they're all sonic characters and you pretty much have that down. (Of course, I don't really draw Sonic characters so I don't have a big say in that category. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a… " width="19" height="19" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="417" title="Sweating a little..."/> ) The only thing I might say is that Shadow needs to look a little angrier, but that just may be my preference.

With your shading you did a pretty good job keeping the light source consistent. It's even until you get to that sign next to Shadow. Everything else is in a nice, mid-afternoon light, but the shadow of that sign looks like it's five or six o'clock. The sign is also the only thing on the plane that has its own shadow (Except Blaze, kind of). I see how Sonic is jumping off of that spring, but he's just sort of floating there without a shadow below him to define where he is in space. The same sort of goes for Shadow.
Also, I can tell that you're still using the burn tool for your shading and highlights, which is great for starting off, but I think you'll find that selecting your own specific colors for highlights and shadows will bring your work to a whole new level. Are you using different layers for each color? Doing that will make this process a whole lot easier, if you're not doing it already. Using slightly more violet tones in the shadows and slightly yellower tones in the highlights, I've found, makes for very beautiful shading.
You also have a lot of gradient shading, which is perfect for skin shading, but other, harder things need harder shadows. It also changes with the harshness of the light. In very harsh, bright light, your shadows will have harder edges, but in softer light, the shadows have soft edges. Make sense?

I think my favorite section of this drawing is Blaze's side. (I have a thing for purple.) I love the texture of the tree behind her, and the colors in it look very nice as well. I also like the contrast you have here of fire vs nature. It's the most interesting part of the piece, in my opinion.

While we're on the topic, I suppose we'll talk about background next. I'll go from left to right. Over in Blaze's territory, I think you did a pretty good job, well, except the waterfall behind her looks a little funky. Try looking at references of waterfalls to get the color and the shape just right. I don't exactly have huge experience in waterfall drawing, so I can't give you any specifics. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a… " width="19" height="19" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="417" title="Sweating a little..."/> I don't have a lot to critique on Sonic's portion of the picture, other than watch your transitions and flow. Make sure each part of the background flows seamlessly into the next.
Over on Shadow's side, well, I'll start out saying that cityscapes are suuuuuuuper hard, and I commend you for attempting one. However, I ask why all of the buildings have their lights showing! It's the middle of the afternoon. Surely the lights inside those buildings' lights are not brighter than the light coming from the sun. Other than that, I think you did pretty well on that side.

The only other critique I might have would be about composition, but I feel like that's a note for another day. Think about your colors and shading, and maybe even look up a few tutorials (ask me for some links if you need help finding good ones). You're doing really well! But remember that as you get better, you also get pickier. ;D Keep up the good work, and I absolutely look forward to the art to come from you!

Much love,
[you know who I am]

Sorry it took me so long to reply... ^^'

Cool! Never had an older sister before!

I most certainly need to fix the shading in the sign and the shadows of the characters.

Actually I'm not using the burn and dodge tool, I've been using the brush tool and lighting and darkening the colors for each item. But I have pretty much been using the same hues, so it's not very diverse in the colors and shading.
Yes I use a different layer for each color.
Interesting, I'll take all that into account.

Yeah, I don't really like the waterfall all too much, I need to work on that.
I don't like shadows background much at all, I am going to edit it based on the critiques I have received.

Thank you so much!! Your advice is wonderful! I really appreciate it

No worries. I've been so busy I haven't even gotten to your reply until now.

;3 Don't worry. I'll be the best older sister you've ever not had.

You should definitely try using different hues, otherwise it just looks like burn and dodge. Also try changing the hardness of your brushes (you can go under brush settings to get in-between settings other than 0% or 100%)
Good. Keep using different layers. Your life will be so much easier.

That's why I personally wouldn't even try to do a waterfall. Too much work for a piece of background.

I'm glad it was helpful. You're doing great, so far! I hope you continue to improve.

Yay!

Thanks, that'll help.

I'm not sure what I'll do with the waterfall. I'll probably try a couple things but end up removing it.

Thanks!!

A splendid piece of art as far as I am concerned. What really sets the mood for the piece as well as make it stands out from the first view is the use of three different, yet detailed backgrounds.

The first part with Blaze is done very well with the cherry blossom tree in the background the value and texture is very nice and eye catching. Also the flame effects on Blaze's hands are very well done as well.

The part with Sonic has a very good background with a nice behind 3-D element as well as good texture and ridges on the path behind Sonic. Also I like the tints and shades of Sonic himself.

As for Shadow's part I must say I like the city buildings as well as their proximity distance between him as well.

Thank you!
I do like the detail of sonic and blaze's background, but I am not completely satisfied with Shadows background, so I am going to work on it more.

For the fire I used a fire brush tool and then used the smudge tool.

Thank you very much for the critique! I REALLY appreciate it!

This looks great! The three different sections all have their own feelings and I think you've managed to compose them separately and stitch them together really well. I do think you could sell the perspective a bit better though; for example, setting the characters in space by having them cast a crisper shadow or pushing the backgrounds back by using less detail and atmospheric effects. Good poster overall and I really like how you used the textures.
