Description

In order to calibrate my true color textures for Jupiter I needed a reference. Unfortunately, most images of Jupiter are porcessed in some way, so I was drawn to raw data. This way I know exactly how the image I'm looking at was processed. Since a new high-resolution texture for Jupiter was recently published, I figured I should redo my reference image along with the texture.

In this case I took red, green and blue filter images of Cassini and only did minimal processing to remove a certain black level that could affect the contrast of the image. I also did some cosmetic work to align the frames more precisely compensating for Jupiter's fast rotation and some denoising. This should not affect the realtive contrast and hues of the image, which is what I was going for.

There is a slight problem with the raw data as some color channels are saturated towards the center, so I excluded these areas while processing my texture. Note that this image is true to relative color (how red vs green vs blue one feature is to another) but not absolute color (the overall hue of the planet) as I did not calibrate this image with a spectrum.
