Hmm this could be usefull though would it be the same for larger areas of fur?
Also the layer mode you used is Overlay

I didn't test it on larger areas, but I think it will work. Just use a larger brush, too, or, if you have patience, you can do it with the small brush, to give a better look.

how will this work out if you want to save it in png and want to colour it in a another colour?

sure! if u save it in png, it will work very well with the transparency. and if u try to make it in other color, just remember to keep in mind the shadow and highlight colors, ok?
