Description
A cover for the number 10 of "Studi Lovecraftiani" [link] , an Italian publication about HPL. This picture was a lot of fun to do, 'cause I had the opportunity to paint both Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard in the same piece. As HPL is probably fighting or calling from the deep some ancestral horror, Robert Howard is using the sword of one of his better known characters, Conan, to send the horrible serpent people back to hell.Having read some of the letters that HPL & REH used to send to each other I think they could have had some fun in seeing themselves depicted this way... Or at least is what I sincerely hope. This work is respectfully dedicated to the memory of Howard Phillips Lovecraft and Robert Ervin Howard.
You can see a sketch of this one, compared to the completed work, on my blog: [link]

Gives an over all feeling of horror without spelling it right out, just like how Mr. Lovecrafts books tend to do some times. wonderful.

Even before I got to your comments for this piece, I was already thinking that it looked like something right out of a Lovecraftian story. I think it's a testament of how well you conveyed Lovecraft's vibes in this drawing: the feeling that something is quite horribly wrong someplace, that the protagonist will probably not be able to put his finger on until it's far too late.
Oh, and I love your art technique. But that goes without saying.

Love it! Escpecially in combination with the title. How writing, good writing at least becomes creation, comes to life and breathes and pumps with every heartbeat. At least that's how I interpret the title.
I've read Howard's "The Black Stone" and it really gave me the chills, I even like it more than some of the Lovecraft stories to be honest. Will be looking more into his work soon.
How big is the original painting and what materials did you use? on first glance the line-shading you did reminds me of color pencils, but the colors are too strong for that. So I'm leaning towards paintings, acrylics maybe? Did you work over it with some sort of pencil or marker or is it just the way you used the brush (for example the white reflections on Lovecraft's chair or cloths)?

Hi, Gabriela!
I'm reading your comment for the first time today, after a long period of vacations.
First of all thanks a lot for your words and your beautiful comment!
I loved "The Black Stone" too. On a "supernatural horror" point of view I like HPL better, but "The Black Stone" is surely a masterpiece, as well as many of the beautiful tales written by R.E. Howard. You perfectly got the significance of the title!
The original painting is not that big, just 14,5 x 15 cm, but I don't have the original here, at the moment, and I can't be more precise. I'm planning to add better informations on my gallery, thoug.
I basically did a sketch with pencils, then I inked it to have a clearer idea.
In the painting phase I used acrylics for the most of the work, but also pencils to add some details or effect. I also used watercolours in order to add some almost transparent colour shade. I didn't use marker, the effect on HPL's face, as well as the other, is just due to the way I used the brush.
Thanks again for your interest!

Sorry for the late answer.
I was just listening to "The Picture in the House" while in the gym, one of my favorite shortstories of his and remembered your painting of Exham Priory when I was imagining the house. Of course the house of the story is a shotgun shack compared to Exham Priory, but the creepy feeling reminded me of the painting. So I was looking through your paintings again and remembered I didn't reply to your comment. - sorry
I was trying out watercolors for a while, after having seen Puimun's paintings here on deviantart, but there was something missing for me when I painted. So now reading your comment again I got the sudden idea of maybe inking the sketches and THEN using watercolors and I'll definetely try that when I get home now, so thanks for your inspiration.
xxx
have a nice day
