Description This is the Flag of an Alternate History variation of Hawaii in which the Kingdom made ties with Britain instead of the United States and Japan (and to a lesser extent Great Britain) defended the Island Nation from the United States when it tries to annex it.

The flag itself is almost similar to the National and State Flag of Hawaii. Only difference is that the colors of each stripe represent the color of each Island and is also positioned in order of how Kamehameha the Great conquered the Island Chain (from the top to bottom: Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau). The seal of the Japanese Imperial Family is also positioned in the center of the Union Jack, signifying the friendship between Japan and Hawaii.

And now, here is a (very long) history of how Hawaii managed to survive to the modern era (in this Alternate timeline at least).

Please enjoy!

(WARNING! Long text ahead!)

After forming his Kingdom in 1810, the newly instituted King Kamehameha the Great met up with Captain George Vancouver (the guy who was with Captain Cook on his journey across the Pacific) to discuss about various things, from the Enlightenment to Sports. However, one thing Vancouver did take note of was Kamehameha's desire to form a protectorate alliance with Great Britain in hopes that they can bring in schools and capital to the Islands and make it prosperous.

However, while relaxing under a tree, an unnamed Employee of Vancouver overheard one of Kamehameha's wives, the Kuhina Nui Ka'ahumanu. He heard that she had already made contact with some American Missionaries who landed on the Island not too long ago. Fearful that the growing presence of the increasingly racist Americans may taint the tranquility (and profitability) of the Islands, the man ran straight to Vancouver when he and his crew were about to leave Hawaii. This vital piece of information alarmed Vancouver as he commanded his crew to sail for a beeline straight for the British Northwest and, eventually, to Great Britain itself.

In 1811, just a year since the Kingdom of Hawaii was formed, more British Ships sailed into the Kona Harbor. Some were military boats sent by the British Empire after being alerted by Vancouver while others were regular passenger Sailboats carrying just a few British Anglican Missionaries, but a lot of Enlightenment Thinkers. Kamehameha was overjoyed, especially after one of the Generals of the Fleet came in with a message from King George III wishing to make trade relations with Kamehameha. In no time at all, Hawaii slowly became a British Protectorate and much of Hawaii's new culture was (and still somewhat is) British.

As Japan opened up their country to trade from outside Nations in the late 1860's thanks to U.S. Commodore Perry, Hawaii's King at the time, David Kalakaua, traveled to Japan to meet with Emperor Meiji to open up relations between the two Monarchies. After much talk, the two Monarchs found that they are in the same predicament as both Hawaii and Japan are coming under increasing pressure by Western Powers, the United States in particular. In an agreement, Meiji agreed to allow the Japanese to emigrate to Hawaii, thus allowing Kalakaua to diversify the gene pool in his Kingdom, in exchange for British Hawaiian Advisors, Intellectuals who were in high demand thanks to the Kingdom of Hawaii having the highest literacy rate in the World at this time.

The Japanese that emigrated to Hawaii were mostly Sugar Plantation workers which has becoming a Big Business venture in Hawaii thanks to its climate. However, the American majority that make up the Plantation owners have no say and no power thanks to the British Intellectuals instilling a more Intellectual Culture on the Islands. In this Hawaii, Intelligence and Literacy, not Land or Money, gives you power and a say on the Islands. In fact, many more Hawaiians, even the commoners, have a higher literacy rate than the average Westerner. It got to the point in which some Asian Immigrants to the Island just came to Hawaii for its Education alone.

Despite this, however, the United States eyed Hawaii greedily. Already creating a compromise with the South after the Douglass won the Election over Abraham Lincoln, the United States is more racist than before and did not believe that Hawaii is a sovereign Nation nor did they believe that Hawaii is much more smarter than they are. They also wanted control of its Royal Port Pearl Harbor which they will use as a strategic Military base. They eventually cooperated with the frustrated American Plantation Owners and, with help of the U.S. Marines, nearly overthrew the Hawaiian Monarchy and put Queen Liliuokalani under house arrest after killing Kalakaua.

While all of this was happening, however, a Japanese Naval Warship entered Pearl Harbor and destroyed the USN Ship moored there. Japanese Naval Forces then began to arrest or kill the Americans. After gaining knowledge of this and hearing the outrage generated by the American populace, President William McKinley demanded Japan to apologize and for Hawaii to surrender to the United States. Both refused to do so and Queen Liliuokalani, after consulting her daughters, slammed the United States and damned them. This eventually led to the longest war since the Thirty Years War: The Great Centennial War.

The Centennial War lasted for a little more than a hundred years, spanning both World Wars and a conflict between the United States and Soviet Russia over Alaska after the Second World War. Hawaii, however, was devastatingly close to losing the War altogether when the Great Depression hit the World. The United States, being in continuous War with Hawaii gave manufacturers something to make for. The only saving grace Hawaii had was their knowledge of the seas and ancient Navigational techniques preserved in books made in the mid-19th Century. With this, Hawaiians conducted "Raid Parties" and stole USN Naval Warships for Hawaiian usage.

After the Second World War, however, Japan, now having the economic base for true Capital Development, began to use their economic might to create various Advanced Academies in Hawaii in an attempt to build a strong Technology base in Hawaii. Much to their surprise, it worked. Hawaii (and to a lesser extent Japan) became the World Leader in Technological Advancement while the United States started to lag behind in development due to the various Business Oligarchies and their neglect of Civil Rights that caused a massive depopulation wave in the States.

The death knell of America's chances at winning the war came in the 1970's when Oil Prices started to skyrocket. The U.S., heavily dependent on Oil imports, began to experience major shortages in fuel and power. Other resources they used to have such as Steel and hard Lumber are also going scarce. Hawaii meanwhile had already began mass producing Solar Panels almost a decade earlier mandated by the Ministry of Resources and Development. The Kingdom also began to produce things far beyond those times, including X-1, a powerful viral agent and one of the World's first WMDs (as Nuclear Weapons do not exist thanks to the untimely suicide of Albert Einstein). By the 1980's, Hawaii and Japan finally turned the War against the United States.

As the American Economy lagged further behind, the American people, frustrated by the War and the near decapitation of the USN Pacific Fleet by continuous Raid Parties, voted Democratic Al Gore as President in 1996. After his inauguration, Gore began to attend talks with Hawaiian and Japanese leaders on a Peace Treaty and on March 11th, 1996, the Centennial War was finally over. Hawaii's nigh impossible struggle for independence was finally earned with sweat, blood, and the power of their close relations with Japan. The United States also signed a separate Treaty with Great Britain on July 14th that same year.

Years went by after 1996, the first years that Hawaiians ever seen peace since the mid 1800's. Feeling very thankful for their involvement, the Kingdom poured in billions of Hawaiian Pounds (yes, they are that British) into Japan in creating a separate Research City in Western Tokyo as a symbol of appreciation for their Japanese allies. Hawaii also gave Britain an estimated 10 million HNP as well. Much of those charities came from the largess of the Hawaiian National Citizenry, which includes not only Native Hawaiian, but also Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, German, and British.

To this day Hawaii still holds as a Capital for Scientific Research and Development though their newly built Japanese Science City, known as Academy City today, rivals Hawaii for that position. Hawaii is also a major gateway for trade and commerce due to its position in the Pacific Rim. However, with both Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton wanting to conquer Hawaii as part of their Presidential Agendas in the United States, Hawaii has to mobilize in order to defend it's sovereignty once more.

Jesus bloody Christ... That was WAAAAAY too long for text... xvx

But yeah, my first shot at Alternate History. I think I made this a bit TOO favorable but honestly I believe Hawaii should have been better off as part of Britain and Japan instead of the United States... Though I do believe Rent and Cost of Living will still be high and, as such, Homelessness would still be a problem in Hawaii.

I will do Walfas stuff soon. So don't worry. :3

That was quite an interesting read. Though I'm not a resident in any one of the countries mentioned and have little knowledge of their histories, it is still quite a fascinating "what if".

(Though I don't think having this as a foundation for my knowledge would be a good idea. Hopefully my mind doesn't lean that way, which it frequently does.)

Don't worry. This is mostly from my head and it is indeed a very big "What if". Imagination can go far. XD
