Description A compilation of how I drew this little doodle of Wonder-Red, of The Wonderful 101.
I've been really into recording every little thing I do lately, so I decided why not mix it up and include the making-of process instead of just the completed doodle?

So here's the process (with very little effort put into explaining) :
Start with a rudimentary sketch, like, an extremely rudimentary sketch. It takes seconds to do. It serves the purpose of getting everything in the right spot so I don't have to sit around erasing and redrawing the same thing constantly. This is created using a reference, and means the difference between a doodle like this, and the garbage in my scrap gallery that I draw recklessly.
The line work is finished after putting in some definition.
Then, you see, shadows and highlights are shapes, so they should be drawn-in as such.
Shade that beast in, I use a mechanical pencil for literally all of it. The areas that are totally black I go ahead and just make black, but the lighter areas I leave light for the time being. The tortillian should be able to carry the darkness into the light areas so shading them in as dark as they need to be with the pencil is really unnecessary. Just blend the darkness into the lightness. Some particularly light areas don't need to be shaded with the pencil because a used tortillian usually has enough graphite caked onto it that it can shade things on its own. I also softened his hair by erasing the lines a bit, giving it a better texture.
Looks like it's ready to be put on the computer at this point, I usually take a photo of my drawings if they have shading because scanners tend to blot it all out anyway. Photos will be in color though, and I want it in gray scale, so I put the piece into Paint Shop Pro 7, where I adjust the colors.
Then, using the lasso tool and the copy and paste buttons, I fix little details that I couldn't quite reach with my pencil (the actual doodle is pretty small, but the resolution of the photo is excessively large). You can see I've edited his mouth, and in the last two pictures I got around to editing his left eye. I also fixed some erase marks on the Shirogane Drive on his chest.
After he arrives on the computer, I up the contrast and color in the whites and blacks. Then, well, all the other colors just sorta happen, this isn't a coloring tutorial. I usually color the skin last because it has the widest variety of colors in it.
The majority is done on paper, so I still consider it traditional despite being colored digitally. I also add the date to drawings when I finish drawing them, I don't wait until after they're colored.

So uh, what do you guys think about process pictures like this? I'm working on a digital painting and I've recorded the whole process of making that, too. I think it's fascinating seeing it from start to finish. I might make a compilation for that one as well.

This is really neat! Looking at these gives me a better idea of how to shade... which is a definite weak point of mine.

Also what a fantastic finished product.

Thank you so much! Shading is one of my favorite parts of drawing, I like to think I'm not bad at it. I'll go into greater detail in my next process compilation.
