I like print because I love this time period, the color red, and how it reminds me of one of my favorite songs by Anne Lennox "Walking on Broken Glass".

You photographed this?? - What kind of camera do you have? - My scanner is crap, but so is my cam.. and I sometimes wonder (a lot actually) what's the best to do, camera or scan.. and I haven't decided yet!
- btw, it's a fav!!

i have a nice-but-not-high-end digital camera, it's a Nikon "coolpix" 4100 ... it is not actually the best thing for what i want, but it was a gift from my parents a few years back and i can't afford the super-duper artist digital cameras... it lets me get pretty good reolution, and i am figuringout the way to make it get "true" colors (generally i have to take it outside for really good colors). but it works OK!

Very beautiful work.
So many ideas and feelings are conveyed through one piece, all presented in an undenyably beautiful package.
I like thw work with color particularly, The semi-bland collors sorounding the bright red. As if to convey passion sorrounded by the mundane, that in conjunction with all the other wonderful imagry in the piece.
Excelent work!

Again, your textures, palettes and saturations are wonderful. Exquisite imagery, lovely and fairy-tale disturbing. Even the background holds interest; the cumulative effect of all the slight distortions throws the viewer off. I'm glad to see a mask design (presumably) of yours, as well; Downey's designs are lovely, but I'd already seen them. ^-^ It pairs beautifully to the theme.

already seen them? at the fair or on her site? anyway, this came before our collaborative effort, so yes, it's "my" design, sort of, it's a very basic theatrical mask with a stick

cwicseolfor In reply to felixxkatt [2007-01-26 03:00:30 +0000 UTC]

I'd poked through her site. (I've had precious few chances to see anyone else's mask work in person, and certainly nothing so good as hers - I'd love to see them in real life, especially as her site has a tendency to be fairly temperamental through Mac OSX and Firefox, so I didn't feel I got a very good look... )
Your design is simple but doesn't lack detail, and it fits in with the theme and period (the braid edging and tassel are so believable - I believe a braid trim to be traditional, and I don't know how many real masks you've seen worn, but a little movement draws the eye, so the tassel seems so 'accurate'...) I'd like to see what you'd do in the medium, as I like your sense of taste and you have an interesting eye. (That, and you've got someone around who might let you see what they're doing. It really can't be very well 'taught,' in my opinion, at least in the handformed leather technique it looks like she uses.)

i think she is mostly self-taught, and she offered to show me how a few times, but we haven't hooked up on that. it is a handformed leather technique, but she is now branching out into adding more things, like yarn and beads to make accents and stuff...

There are some tutorials online nowadays (like ~Ranasp 's, for example) but when I got started there was absolutely nothing anywhere. I had to self-teach everything, as have most maskmakers I've ever known of. There are books and a lot of schools and workshops on how to make leather masks using a mold, but generally I like the spontaneity of handforming and the element of artist involvement. As far as Downey, I like her use of color and shading, if that's anything you think she'd like to hear.
As far as you learning, I simply like your style and think it'd be interesting to see how your sense of lines and dimension transferred into the medium ^-^ You might even do a collaboration or two directly on the masks. (Am I fangirling yet? I'll stop. x.x Unless you have anything further to say, of course. I've very much enjoyed this discussion, though, thank you!)

I adore this, but is it symbolic that she's blindfolded? The color is wonderful and I could only guess that it was an oil painting?

there are a lot of symbols. yes it is symbolic that she is blindfolded, and that there's a swarm of bees in the background adm she is standing in thorns and roses and holding a mask as well. but i'm not gonna go into it all right now, i'm afraid.
