WIP 3. As per usual, this is a while back, because ideas always come while I'm setting it up for a WIP. So I've got more progress since this. I left out the engine flares because I was having a considerable amount of trouble getting them to work out for some reason. Oh, well. The mesh is more important. The little beveled bumps are laser emitters. The mirror arrays are pretty darn small, so you can't see them, and they're inset into slots anyway. Basically, I added a bunch more greebling, and a couple new engines. And, of course, the (I think) 144 laser emitters.

Currently? Over eighty one thousand. Any suggestions? This one is still in progress.

hmm as for suggestions.....maybe add some sort of hangar bay? or auto turret defence systems? maybe even a deflector sheild generator? haha what do you think?

This is a battlecruiser, not a carrier. It does actually have room for 24 small drone fighters, right above the engines. You can't see it from this angle. Next WIP, I'll try to get some other viewpoints. As for turrets, as it turns out, I sorta suck at turrets. I just can't get them to turn out. So to that end, I've got a sort of laser grid set up. You see all those beveled bumps scattered over the ship (last count, there are over a hundred and fifty)? Those are emitters. What happens is there's a set of lasers in the center of the ship. The beams are carried via fiber optics to the emitters, where they are directed via mirrors to their targets. It saves on money because all that might get damaged is a mirror, some motors, and a bit of fiber optics. And lastly, for deflector shields, there are four generators. Right in the middle, there's a beveled bump. That's one of them, and there's another on the bottom. And then behind the rear cannons, in the center, there's that weird area with lots of beveled bumps. That's the other. Again, there's another on the bottom. There's a lot of defense dedicated towards the engines. I'm continuing work on making them look more hightech. It's not the highest priority, though, so it might be a bit in coming.

Hmm, this is sorta weird, though. Before I started this project, I didn't really have anyone notice my work at all, besides people who I gave stuff to as gifts. Now I've got three people who are regularly watching my stuff. Interesting.

Memo to self:
Battlecruisers build popularity. Attempt to buy one on Ebay to possibly offset identity of nerd.

Never mind, no chance of that. I'm too geeky for a mere battlecruiser to solve the problem.

LMAO!!!!!!!! BAHAHAHAHA!!! ur a funny one mate!
just because ur into sci-fi and games and ships doesent make u a nerd if so im the biggest nerd here hahaha. i think a nerd is someone who still plays D&D with the D&D club and 'magic of the gathering' i remember backin school all the 'nerds' played with that srtta stuff....

3D is way to cool haha

(i hope i havent offended you if you play D&D or something lmao)

even if you do...youir 3D skills make up for it hahaha

anyway enough rambling on about complete nonsence!

is there any excape pods?also is there some sort of bay that can take in smaller dammaged ships in an emergency?

I have played D&D, yes. But only a couple times. I don't really have many friends who live within a distance that I'm willing to travel often, and none of them play. But I do have a fairly substantial collection of Magic: The Gathering cards, even though I don't play, along with Pokemon cards (some of which are in Japanese) and Digimon. In all, I've got maybe 1.5 thousand cards. Maybe geek would be better. My friends and I consider it a reasonable purchase to spend over five hundred dollars on a piece of software. We have hacked computers, software, and other such things. The Apple Store asked one of my friends to come back when he turned 18 and apply for a job. At the time, he was 14. Coming back from spring break, one of my friends showed us an add for Adobe CS4. All of us have copies of CS3 and know how to use it better than the teacher. In middle school, the first stop for tech support was us, before even trying to go to the computer teacher. I think we qualify as geeks.

Good points, there. I'll see about it. I'm probably not going to do much more tonight, but I'll try to add it tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions.

haha ok so u proved u where a little bit nerdy....but theres a normal person in there someware that can do awesome 3D!! hahaha i guess 'nerd' only fits inside someones grid of understanding or paradyme. and im gonna stop there with the technical stuff

ohh also u should add like ONE big ion cannon or something even though u suck at them...its only one have a search on DA for refrence pics, ive seen plenty

I'm not sure that "normal people" really do 3d modeling. I think I'm the only one in my grade at my school. I haven't actually met anyone in real life who does it. Anyway, I take great pride in my geekiness.

I've been trying to find a way to add some big central weapon, but I haven't been able to come up with anything that wouldn't completely destroy the outline of the ship. Although the Rhine Maiden from Xenosaga might be pretty cool. I could probably embed it into the main frame, and if I could get some particle effects hooked up with it, it would look utterly awesome. No, this is not supposed to be in that universe, it's just that I can steal stuff from it so long as I don't make a profit off it. I'll see what I can do.

Thanks. I'm pleased with how it's turning out, too. About 160000 polies. It's taking me a while. Why do I get the feeling I'm not going to UV map the whole ship?

this model is really great. Like you've said I was using sketchup for my stuff but sketchup automatically looks "cartooney" unless you use some wicked render-plugin.
There are certain Pros and Cons you should consider when using sketchup starting with
Pros:
- easy and fast to render, nice, if you want the "cartooney" look.
-you don't have to bother with lightning settings
-Sone quiete neat texture modification options
cons:
-Hard to implent sketchup pictures into a "real" background via image manipulation after rendering.
-You'll have hard time to make realistic-looking pictures.

I don't use Sketchup for texturing and rendering. I export to Blender. It's free, not too hard to learn, and has a lot of features. I actually like being able to position lights, it allows you to determine the mood of the scene more easily, and make it much more realistic. In Blender, you can just render with an image as the background, or render with alpha and put it over the background in Photoshop. Rendering may take a bit, but it's not horrendous at the level I do (this thing took about one and a half minutes.) Texture manipulation is more difficult, but you're less likely to be using general tiled images and more likely to be using UV maps and procedural texturing. I'm not going to UV much of this thing, though. Living hell to unwrap it correctly. In return for a bit more effort, you get much better results: proper shadows, adjustable lighting, reflectivity, radiosity, ambient occlusion, particle effects, animation, you name it.

Oh, I updated with a better shot. This one has full ambient occlusion. It also increased the render time fourty fold, from about two seconds to nearly a minute and a half.

Yeah, so any comments? Right now, most of what I'm doing is just greebling. There hasn't been much added since this.
