When whispers get heard

As FTH drove off in a van parked not far from the forest line, leaving the Whispering Woods behind, Muriel observed their departure from the safety of the early morning tree shadows. When the vehicle became too small to properly see in the distance, the undead retreated into the woodland, heading back to the great old tree.
At the entrance of the burrow Branwen and Socorro were already waiting for them. "So good to see you again," started Branwen with Socorro giving a nod in agreement, "we felt the tension calming down and returned here. I assume it went well?"
"It went without conflict, yet it wasn't what we expected," Muriel's tone lacked the usual confidence, betraying the pondering that went on in their mind since the strange discovery of the rods. "We need to discuss it, come with me," Muriel gestured their friends to follow, as they've entered the burrow. Soon all three were standing on the flat red cushion, ready to travel to Soulscape.
A few moments later the group appeared in one of the Soulscape's numerous caverns, the one that Muriel called home. Their way led them to a dimly lit room with a mechanical-looking column with height of an average table placed in the middle of the chamber. Muriel invited their guests to sit around the device.
"A thought projector," explained Muriel, seeing perplexity in Socorro's eyes, before proceeding to operate the machine that responded with quiet humming noise. The niche in the middle of the device got filled with foggy substance from the two smaller tubes surrounding it, which soon took a shape of a sphere.
The fog began to fade and a forest clearing with a few trees surrounding it could be seen inside the transparent sphere, as it if actually contained a highly detailed miniature diorama inside it. Both Branwen and Socorro recognized the trees, however the projection also displayed a few unfamiliar rods rising from the ground.
"What are these?" Branwen broke the silence with the question that occupied the minds of all three of the undead now.
"The reason FTH came to the Woods today," replied Muriel before describing the recent encounter. "I haven't seen anything like that from them before. The wards don't react to these rods and the people who placed them seemed to favor certain spots, maybe marking them. Why there though? There wasn't anything significant in that part of the forest." Muriel stated their thoughts out loud.
"Could it be a sign of some good changes this time?" Socorro's voice sounded hopeful. "Maybe they are going to build a new settlement there, marking the territory? And as they didn't come with soldiers, it could be a sign of them moving on from an old conflict."
"Settlement in the woods doesn't sound that plausible, they favor open spaces," said Branwen with doubt in her voice. "It could be anything really, I'd rather go take a look at them in person."
"And I could ask around the town, maybe they know more about it," said Socorro.
"Then it's settled. While you two will be away, I'm going to ask around in Soulscape. Let's meet here next day," Muriel's voice regained its confidence, "We are going to find out the purpose behind the rods."
