Description This is the actual Godzilla expression model sheet that I did for the 1998 animated TV show. I included it in the main model pack to give the Storyboard artists reference on how draw Godzilla's face from different angles. It was never colored. I was unable to clean the linework up due to time restraints, so it remained a rough throughout the production.

I've been working on coloring this sketch over the past few months, so that the shapes make more sense to you.

Yup and it was hard work, we had a week to design each show, all of the characters, turns, mouthcharts, for 40 episodes. One week!
Keep in mind that I designed four 40 episode shows back to back with a 13 episode squeezed in there to keep the pressure on.

Are you sure that you are ready for that kind of punishment?

Good, if you do get an opportunity to work, I hope you survive in the trenches.

It's a job, you do your best, people make notes and have opinions and try to micromanage you.
Drawing monsters is only a small part of what I do, I'm glad that I did it, I'm happy to have survived it, now I'm free to use all of my creative faculties.
That was a job, this is play.

so did you get a start with an internship or did you have to study for many years before applying directly to the studios? cus im thinking of applying for an internship with Nickelodeon for the summer but i still need to build up a decent looking portfolio before i can

Internships are probably a good way to go.

I was fated to work in animation, I never wanted to, I just fell into it. I wanted to be a cartoonist, and the comic I did in Australia got the attention of a Director in Hollywood who showed it to his Producer who was looking for an artist who could solve a problem they were having on ALF. I solved it for them, and for the next 3 decades they kept flying me back to the USA, and I'd keep escaping to return to comics. I got away this time! >

Oh yes, I've been self publishing and have a couple of comics due out this year through Image Comics. It doesn't pay well, but I'm much happier!

I have Yorris due out mid year and I've been self publishing Zooniverse which is the comic that I did back in 1986, the one that got me started in animation. Zooniverse is also appearing in a new magazine from Image which I announced here: zooniversecomic.blogspot.com.a…

(sorry for the late reply) holy crap they look super professional, i mean like .. they have this feel of a popular mobile game, but at the same time the designs are so intricately done and its like .. so many finely tuned shades around folds and wrinkles that we normally wouldnt do, but everything you put into the colors and tones just defines them even more so and the world looks quite expansive and unique in a way, it has the feel of one of those classic comics with exaggerated features and whatnot, but its original and unique in its own way, i really like how it looks, that is the stuff to be proud of . O .

Your Zilla was one of my favorite "suits", so to speak. Up there with BioGoji, LegendaryGoji, and...i forget the other one's name. MogeGoji?
Point is, its a shame Zilla was de-godded: your Zilla, once again, was always one of my favorites.

Khialat In reply to MurdocNerada [2014-08-10 00:15:10 +0000 UTC]

You know, the "God" part of the name was originally just a coincidence. When the original 1954 "Gojira" was Americanized as "Godzilla, King of the Monsters!", they just wanted a name that echoed the original, but didn't sound exclusively Japanese. It was the fandom that has insisted that the "God" part was literal - true, the human characters call him a "god" in the new 2014 film, but throughout history humans have called all sorts of things they fear or can't understand "gods".

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MurdocNerada In reply to Khialat [2014-08-10 18:10:11 +0000 UTC]

I do know that. I'm only parleying what Toho said, man. I think it's a sort of joke they were making, as well as also carrying the statement that they didn't consider Zilla a "true" godzilla anymore? I KNOW that the name is gojira. I never said that the god part is literal. I'm not that daft. still p daft tho, but still.
so tl;dr, im not stupid, i know its gojira, always have, it was p much what toho said. You can see Zilla's page on the godzilla wiki i you want proof of my statement.
Sorry if it seems like i'm being defensive, but what you said has this feel of an insinuation that i'm new to the franchise and overall spouting idiotic bullocks when I'm not. I'm sure that wasn't your intention, but it's kind of how it came off. sorry, once again. ^u^;;

Khialat In reply to MurdocNerada [2014-08-10 18:28:30 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry too. It's just I really loved watching both the 1998 film and cartoon as a kid, so I can't help but feel offended by the way Toho and so many fans treat this version.

MurdocNerada In reply to Khialat [2014-08-10 18:36:36 +0000 UTC]

Eh, even if Zilla was de-godded, I still love him. Second favorite "suit" [easier than saying incarnation wanna fight about it XD], really.
And yeah, Zilla gets a bad rep, but he really doesn't deserve it. Admittedly he deviated further away from what the entire franchise was used to, but I kind of liked it. I consider him separate from Godzilla/Gojira, but he's  creature in his own right. A sort of...evolutionary descendant, but not the same creature, so to speak. That's what marine iguanas are in comparison to "Godzillasauruses", I'd suppose.

but seriously no Godzilla can hold a candle to Biollante imo

I would say she's like Audrey II's territorial big sister, but I'm still not sure which came first XD Think it was Twoie, at 1960 something.
i may be a bit biased on her part though, considering she was my first godzilla kaiju

Khialat In reply to MurdocNerada [2014-08-10 19:06:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think she's one of the most interesting "kaiju", having a human aspect in her DNA.

To my knowledge a suit was never used for the 1998 film, it was either CG or sculpted models (which I saw first hand).

Who cares what ungracious people say. History still stands, our Godzilla existed, Toho approved it, Sony made the movie, we made the TV show. Be proud of your favorite version, it still is a valid historical Godzilla.

The493Darkrai In reply to filbarlow [2014-07-26 00:09:54 +0000 UTC]

A suit was actually used in 4 shots of the movie: godzilla.wikia.com/wiki/Shodai…

Of course, Zilla and Zilla Junior are Godzilla incarnations. However, their official name is Zilla now because Toho renamed it [ godzilla.wikia.com/wiki/The_Zi… ], it's not just some butthurt haters that can't get over things form 16 years ago.  I really like Zilla, his design is very cool and it's sad so many people hate him.

Of course the movie and the TV show are still called "Godzilla" and the show and movie refer to them as "Godzilla," but as was stated in a Henshin!Online interview, Sony owns the movie and TV show--Toho owns the character. DVDs and things might still call him Godzilla but that's because the movie and The Series call him that.

It's okay if you keep referring to Zilla as "Godzilla" Fil Barlow, since you worked on this show hands-on and you put a lot of effort into it.

Very interesting, and thank you for all of the information. You'll notice that I was careful adding the disclaimer,"To my knowledge" as everything was so secretive during the development of the TV show I was never shown those suits, just marquettes and animatronic versions. So thank you for the link to the suit images.

Obviously I had no idea that Toho had gone to such lengths to distance themselves from the American movie. I knew at the time that Toho, like Sony, was upset that the movie failed, and I'm confident that they would have supported the 1998 version had the movie done well, there was bold talk before the 1998 screening about ongoing Godzilla movies.

At the end of the day I worked for Sony, not Toho, and seeing as the rights for the Godzilla animation are owned by Sony I can rightfully continue to use the name Godzilla, because that is all I'm concerned with. My old work on a Sony project.

MurdocNerada In reply to filbarlow [2014-07-25 23:07:45 +0000 UTC]

I say "suit" as a general term for incarnations, sorry if that wasn't clear. It's shorter to type out and say, harder to stumble on, and since suits were used for MOST of the movies, it tends to convey the meaning I mean, y'kno? But I understand what you mean: Zilla was one of the 3 entirely CG Godzillas.

I'm not saying he's not a Godzilla, but Toho did de-god him if i remember correctly. Who cares, though, he's a giant marine iguana.
i love marine iguanas.
