Description This is the actual Godzilla expression model sheet that I did for the 1998 animated TV show. I included it in the main model pack to give the Storyboard artists reference on how draw Godzilla's face from different angles. It was never colored. I was unable to clean the linework up due to time restraints, so it remained a rough throughout the production.

I've been working on coloring this sketch over the past few months, so that the shapes make more sense to you.

I always did like this version of Godzilla, in part because unlike the movie version, the cartoon version actually behaved like the King of the Monsters. Now if only he could have encountered Mothra and King Ghidorah, that would have been awesome.

Yeah I don't know why we never touched on fantastic monsters, even if we didn't have Toho's blessing we certainly could have come up with our own.

I really don't know what's wrong with people, these are fictitious characters, simple as that.

Is it hard to draw like this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

filbarlow In reply to Sniper0092 [2014-07-02 04:37:39 +0000 UTC]

Not for me, I mean sure he's a pain in the arse to get the angles and perspective right, but I always use structure when I draw. Here's an example of what I mean ------> filbarlow.deviantart.com/art/G…

Inspired by Preston Blair (Google him) I began using structure around the age of 8, and it became habit, but Manga has unfortunately killed that tradition and most artists today have to work backwards to develop the habit of using structure. Most don't though, and it shows.

Sniper0092 In reply to filbarlow [2014-07-02 20:12:45 +0000 UTC]

Manga actually involves structure, a LOT..I would know. Thanks for this.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

filbarlow In reply to Sniper0092 [2014-07-03 04:19:02 +0000 UTC]

I'm talking about facial structure on characters, I've looked at your gallery, and I wouldn't suggest structure if you weren't in need of it. I can see you need a bit of guidance in that area which is why Preston Blair is a good place for you to start. But hey, if my suggestions aren't the way you want to go, that's okay.

So anyway follow the links, do your own inquiry and best of luck!

I really don't know, I was buried away in an office, and was working on Max Steel by the time this show was airing. All I knew was that the movie bombed but we were already committed to the production. We did our best, and the movie did whatever it did, but I was out of the loop regarding the public's response to our show.

I suspect that once the movie bombed Toho retracted their support of the project, but they were all over it when it was going to be a blockbuster.

I've got to say this, his face is adorable. Really nice chart too, by the way. The way you placed the angles close to each other makes it looks like he's taking a look at a mirror.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

filbarlow In reply to MotorRoach [2014-07-02 01:15:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it does. The whole point of the chart was easy reference for the storyboard artists and animators, so that's why each angle is matched up like that.

Thank you. Using structure when drawing characters is, sadly, a dying art. It's second nature to me, but I rarely see artists on DA use it. It's a pity, their work would be stronger for it.

filbarlow In reply to Groudan383 [2014-07-02 01:07:23 +0000 UTC]

Much appreciate all of your support!

Godzilla is hard for me to post for because the wiki's show most of my art from the Production already, although they don't credit me. It is a bit disheartening. Obviously someone from the 1998 production just handed over the model packs, it's definitely someone who was in the Color Department. So I've wanted to post this piece for a long time because I noticed that the wiki's don't have it. Yet. They'll probably steal it now.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Groudan383 In reply to filbarlow [2014-07-02 02:41:30 +0000 UTC]

No problem Fil! I always love seeing GTS stuff. Its like you're keeping the show alive

Yeah, that really does suck. Im really sorry to hear that. Then again, you cant blame them. How else are they going to find out who the artists are and give credit for pieces that were once deemed top secret? Why dont you make a Wikipedia account and edit it yourself?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

filbarlow In reply to Groudan383 [2014-07-02 03:31:26 +0000 UTC]

My name is credited at the beginning of the show, so that might give them a clue.

Good suggestion, but I just don't have the time or interest to fix their wiki. I'll stick to posting here, it's up to them to get their facts straight. Plus you people appreciate my work more

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Groudan383 In reply to filbarlow [2014-07-02 04:23:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but they cant tell for sure. For all they know, you could have just been one of the artists out of a few. It doesnt show who drew what.

I suppose. If it ever does bother you, you could always go in and fix it cause laziness will make people not cite you lol. Im really glad you see DA as a place where you can post your work and where its appreciated. I should also thank you for posting this stuff up. Like i said before, you dont know who cool it is to see orignal art from your favorite cartoon

filbarlow In reply to Groudan383 [2014-07-02 10:37:12 +0000 UTC]

Just keep in mind that my "Fil" icon is on a bunch of the uncredited works that are posted.

It would bother anyone, especially when most of the wiki is my art and it's uncredited. As I said I just don't have the energy to chase it all down.

The disappointing thing is I post less Godzilla production art here because most of my work is already up somewhere else.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Groudan383 In reply to filbarlow [2014-07-02 17:10:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but A LOT of people aren't going to know its you lol. I bet its also really hard to see especially if it is in cursive lol.

Yeah, it really does suck. Art theft and uncredited art can really suck for an artist. You don't even have to go in and modify everything. All you have to do is put down that you were the lead artΒ designer for the cartoon.

But that shouldn't stop you from posting it regardless. I would much rather see it come from the ACTUAL person who did them/ worked on itΒ rather than a wiki page

Don't worry I'll keep posting here, I just realized that the black and white art doesn't interest people as much as when I recolor them, which takes more time. I have a rat creature I'm coloring that I'll be posting next.

Groudan383 In reply to filbarlow [2014-07-03 16:06:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, colors are great. They really make pieces pop out and come to life. I bet this didn't look as cool as it is now when it was just the B&W version. Oh, you mean the giant rats from that episode lol? Awesome! Can't wait to see it
