Description     I dont have a current wip pic, but I figured I'd give you guys something to look at. this is from 2 days ago. Since then I finished carving around the small clock by the handle, put the angles on the handle guard, routed one of those small clocks, and smoothed out the wings with bondo and a buffing tool. There's still about 5 full days of work till I finish carving it, which could actually be more like 1 week or so actual time based on my day job schedule.

This time the spikes are centereed instead of being on side and I think I like it better this way. I just have to get the angles right and it should look great. Also, remember how terribly rough the finish was on the last two because of the glow paint? Well now I have a spray gun, so that shouldn't be a problem anymore. I just have to get the right consistency of the lacquer and powder.

******************

ONE MORE THING: Should I cast a clear resin cover for the small clock like on the past ones, or leave it open? Either way the details are being put in.

just out of curiosity.. my keyblade was made out of "consumer electronics, oracle and Game developer foam board adverts" and I had to use a jigsaw to remove some of it...and I wanted ot know how much your wooden one ways...

weight distribution is the one concern i have to deal with because everytime i held it straight.. not only it goes downward on my blade.. but the same time it also caused a huge bend!

It weighs maybe 10 pounds at most, but all keyblades are too heavy as you may know so it feels more like 20 if you could it at an angle from the handle. The x-blade weighs 15 pounds and i could barely pick it up with one hand, at least without fear of dropping it.

The wood is extremely sturdy though, and i've never had a structural problem except with the skull noise because of the design itself being thin.

How heavy would you say the average keyblade you craft weighs?

finaformsora In reply to Shadowian1 [2014-03-02 04:39:43 +0000 UTC]

Maybe 7 pounds. The x-blade was only 15 and it's over 6 feet tall

the problem with this kind of work is that even though you just finished one side, there is ANOTHER side to carve after that!

No, i mean i did both sides. The two pics of the wings are each side. I'd say i should have all of the lower half done by tomorrow or tuesday.

But it's so freakin worth it it's so soothing to see it finally symetrical. Like a warm glow of relief in my stomach

Bondo is too rich for my blood, I think that with enough sanding, the finish will be super smooth. what wood did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

finaformsora In reply to shishikokoroyuki [2014-01-29 19:05:33 +0000 UTC]

I had to use pine since since the key is so large and i didnt want to spend an extra $30 on doing it from poplar. Plus pine is lighter. The only problem is the grain being denser aling certain parts which messed up some carving arund the wings.

Bondo makes it super smooth after sanding and I had to use it to align the sides/fill in chipped spots. It's quite cheap and easy to use.

I like how this keyblade is a cross between No Name and Xehanort's keyblade. I think that resin with a high gloss will be beneficial to the clock as well.

This is awesome and it's not even finished! So much details! How do you do this without going crazy??

I think that the resin cover will make it look better, but use a very clear resin, to give it a more glassy effect, I saw that the other one you made, although it was still awesome, the resin looked a litlle...blurry and opaque. I don't know how to explain it. I saw some resins that, once dried, look super translucent and glossy, and I think they would let see the details better. Its just and opinion, so do what's better for you!

I had to use an open mold which was actually just a plastic package that a roll of tape came in, and it was all bumpy and cloudy. This time i'll be making an actual mold for it. Plus i ound that painting clear nail polish over resin brings back it's transparency after you sand it.

It's coming along nicely!! I've been busy not doing anything to mine but need to get back to it. I'm liking your how centered everything is looking. And I think you should cast a resin cover. It would look a lot more clock like!
