Description
Made with the image drawn for Kitten on RagnaInfo.net, one of the winners of my auction, which is a very long and complicated story but anyways.I was asked to take in progress photos of my marker work and I decided to just make a tutorial out of the photos. This is the first tutorial I've made like this for deviantART and it took a full 4 hours to put together, so I hope people like it and I would love to have some feedback. The image is of Kitten's huntress Kari Evelyn.

Wow, I used copics for a couple months, but I never figured to use the colorless blender the way you used it in this turorial. Thanks, it helped with shading a LOT! :3

that white pen (i'm assuming it's not correction fluid) you used for the highlights is it a Copic or some other brand? Also, how does that white pen go over other colors? Like does it simply fade into the existing ink or does it clearly show the white? thnx

It's a Uni-ball Signo white gel pen. It's mostly opaque (if you put it enough ink on the page) so it goes over other colors like correction fluid, but a little more milky. So, you can use it for opaque white highlights or for a milder highlight. I hope that helps!

Hello~ I'm new to copics. I was just wondering, how long do copics usually last. I think I know what you'll probably say is, "it depends on how often you use them". I don't use mine all that often.... Maybe twice a week. Not too much. Do you think you could give me an estimate on how long they'll last me? Since they're so expensive, I'd like to make sure I'm getting good usage out of them. Thanks for any help you can offer. ^^

It also depends how heavily you're using them per piece! I've actually only had to replace a few markers here and there (heavily used ones like skin tones and greys). If you find one marker is being used often, purchase an ink refill (about $7-8 I believe) and it'll be the ink equivalent of probably 5-10 more markers in that color. Definitely worth the price. I have ink refills for N7, N3, and E50.
As for a time estimate, I really can't even give you a ballpark because I don't use my markers that often! I am sorry. ): But at least I hope my tip about purchasing ink refills instead of replacing your dry marker will help get the most money out of your markers.

Unfortunately you're not going to find Copic markers anywhere for less than $5-6 USD, but sometimes at conventions (in US) there are booths that offer a buy one, get one free deal with Copic markers, which comes out to about $3 each. I haven't seen these in a while, though, and of course you'll need to pay for a convention badge to get in (usually ~50-70 for a weekend pass). Hope that helps!

Draw a lot, draw every day!! Also if you're interested in purchasing copics, try to get them at conventions or other events or promotions, because they get very pricy very fast @__@

Oh, ok! And I could draw anything? I have a set of 32, and even they were expensive! If you checked my newest deviation, that's how my first picture with copics turned out! For me, I think it's a new kind of art, and I like to draw people (mostly anime) but it's crazy! And I am going to an anime convention in February, so I'll keep an eye out for them. Thanks for the tips! I'm sure I'll be doing lots more with copics!

Definitely expand your range and draw everything!! You can start with anime people, but move onto things like figure studies with muscles, skeletons, also just everyday objects around you, like tables, chairs, curtains, etc. to understand lighting, shadows, and perspective (: Have fun in February at your convention!!
P.S. I think I only have 38 copics total haha (: You can do a lot with what you have! Your first piece looks already great!

I wonder why copic markers are usually put with manga. I've seen some artwork that used copic markers but wasn't manga style. But anyway, this was relly helpful and I hope I buy the right kind when I get some.

I'm stupid, but I bought a set of graphic markers only to find out they're water-based, and that I don't know how to use them. They're chisel ended and leave horrible stripes all over the place! I'm guessing copic is alcohol-based, and so the 0 white blender is alcohol based. So, if I want to make the streaks disappear, should I paint a film of water on my art? That sounds weird, lol.
Another question is, are there oil-based markers?

finni In reply to tsukinoiri [2011-09-17 18:06:03 +0000 UTC]
I was browsing through my old deviations and found I left this question unanswered! My bad 8( I'm not sure if your question is still relevant but I'll still try to explain this concept:
Yes, you could technically use water to blend your water-based markers. This is exactly how watercolors work, so I would just opt for watercolors instead so I get more control over the flow of color and the application via brush tip is also much more precise. If you were to paint water over your art with your water based markers, it should get rid of streaks however if you're not using a thick watercolor type paper, you will just have a really destroyed drawing.

That happened to me. I bet you feel gutted after spending that money, 'specially 'cause they're expensive. D: Back to the question, I would think that they are water-based so thats what i think. Hope it helps
