Description
Made with the image drawn for Kitten on RagnaInfo.net, one of the winners of my auction, which is a very long and complicated story but anyways.I was asked to take in progress photos of my marker work and I decided to just make a tutorial out of the photos. This is the first tutorial I've made like this for deviantART and it took a full 4 hours to put together, so I hope people like it and I would love to have some feedback. The image is of Kitten's huntress Kari Evelyn.

I got my markers from either the Japanese import bookstore Kinokuniya, online ordering, or from various anime conventions where Copic sets up a booth. They're a bit difficult to get a hold of, unfortunately.
Have you ever worked with watercolor? Using the colorless blender is like working with watercolors after you've wet the paper first. The concept is the same and the results are similar as well.

i use watercolor pencils
but i haven't added water to them in over a year lol.
they're my greatest fear XD
yeah, i can see where you're getting at with the similarities.
hm, i was looking for copics at Michaels.com
and all they had was Prismas.
idk if that's any better than copics or not.
and i don't think i'll be allowed to an anime convention any time soon -sigh-
i really want to experiment with them
but maybe i should practice more with colored pencils and watercolor first

Thanks for the tutorial!
I understand more than I did before now, thanks to you! (:
But I've still got a few questions, cos I'm new to this kind of colouring method.
What kind of paper do you use, and what is the number of the colourless blender?
It's be very much appreciated if you could tell me
Happy holidays! <3

I have a question....what is the white marker called? I just barley started on copics XD:;;;
Also...the blending marker...do you really need it..or will the markers already blend together?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
finni In reply to Khuzay [2008-04-05 03:54:42 +0000 UTC]
In the first paragraph, it says the white marker is "0 Colorless Blender" -- that's the exact text printed on the Copic Marker. As to whether you need it or not... think about like watercolors. If you want your watercolors to blend in a wash, you'll need some water put on the canvas first. It's the same thing with this method of blending colors with Copics. However, if you don't plan on leaving any white spots, the colors will directly blend into each other. However, for me, when I'm coloring skin, I always end up leaving some spots blending into the white of the paper, so the colorless blender is essential for that.
Hope that helps!

I understand what you mean by the ink to outline with bleeding. -_- It was not pretty. I'm ordering the Copic Multi-liner but my question is do you use the Multli-liner to outline the eye lashes? I used the Copic Marker black to do this and when I wetted it with the colorless to shade the eyes it started to bleed.
Also thanks agian for the tutorial. ^___^

finni In reply to LunarRain17 [2008-02-27 08:05:53 +0000 UTC]
Actually eyelashes and other thick portions always end up bleeding... just a little. I always use the Copic Multiliner to outline everything that I color in Copic marker... It's considerably less noticeable with the multiliner and I don't know HOW some of my friends manage to pull it off with Sakura Microns, because 80% of the time those bleed all over the place for me.
BUT here's a seeeecret trick:
I ink lines little less thick than I would like them to be, finish coloring the entire image, and then go back and re-ink over the parts where there was some smearing or otherwise try to cover them up and add additional line weight. In the end it might look a little sloppy up close, but the overall image isn't ruined by some bigass smudge.
Hope that helps and if you have anything else you want to discuss, feel free to bring it up with me! :3

Well, just remember that there's no "correct" way of using markers, so don't be afraid to experiment! This tutorial just outlines some tips that I use while I am coloring, but it's important to develop your own style. : ) Have fun!

Hi
I hope you aren't angry but I kinda like the way you drew noses and eyes in this tutorial..I started drawing mine like that too..If you don't like me drawing like this, I can change the style (I'm changing the noses anyway)
This tutorial is 100% great and this was really helpful..I've used it for many copic drawings..mainly the face shading. Thanks, Billie.
