Description Made with the image drawn for Kitten on RagnaInfo.net, one of the winners of my auction, which is a very long and complicated story but anyways.

I was asked to take in progress photos of my marker work and I decided to just make a tutorial out of the photos. This is the first tutorial I've made like this for deviantART and it took a full 4 hours to put together, so I hope people like it and I would love to have some feedback. The image is of Kitten's huntress Kari Evelyn.

Ooh, thank you so much for the tutorial! ^_^ Its really help.
I'm just wondering, I like to draw in my sketchbook and keep my drawings in there (instead of ripping them out etc) but I see a lot of people like to rip them out / or draw on seperate sheet. Should I do that too? XD Is it better, I mean?

Is Copic better then Prismacolor? I read somewhere said that Copic are very expensive and only for experts, and Prismacolor is not very expensive but arent very good |D
And then theres the low cost Letraset markers... @_@
I'm really confused. I want to get some sets for Xmas XD

And does it really matter what ink pen you use? I use this -
[link] (Sorry! XDDDDD)
They seem ok, but just sometimes they bleed and smudge little.

Sorry for the long long comment...
By the way, very nice drawing!

Hmm, so Prisma's and Copics work together?

Do you know if the Prisma blender works with Copics? My Sketch colorless blender died on me (may it rest in peace -_- ), and I can't seem to find another one anywhere...

All I can say is, thanks for taking the time to make a Copic tutorial for beginner artists such as myself who have recently started using Copics as a medium.

I really appreciate this. I'll be faving this, incase I could really use a useful reference. =]

As for lineart. Are the Copic Multiliners more preferable? Or regular inking tools?

nice tut i enjoyed reading it but i got a question how did you start off with your markers set (purchasing) did you buy a certain amount then build up or just bought a crap load all together

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

finni In reply to blueshadow120 [2007-10-10 08:44:54 +0000 UTC]

I started off with just 8 markers, then slowly built up a collection after that. What I did was every time I was coloring, there would be a color I wish I had, so I wrote it down on a little paper and then kept that in mind the next time I was able to purchase a few markers. Pretty much, I bought colors as I needed them. I highly discourage buying sets... because there's always markers in there that you won't use, and the price offset, in my opinion, isn't worth it for colors you'll never use.

Hope that helps!

finni In reply to B-shiki [2007-10-03 01:42:37 +0000 UTC]

Have you ever used watercolors before? In watercolor, to make a wash, you put down some water with your brush first, then apply color. The same concept is used here: put down the colorless blender to wet the paper, and then add the colors on lightly, which will allow the colors to seep into each other and blend. I hope that helps, if not, try looking at some watercolor tutorials to understand the concept. : )

You're amazing! Thank you for this wonderful Tutorial!
How many shades do you usually use for the base coloring and the shadowing? I'm new to using copics and I only have 25 Ciao shades. The usual 2 shades of one color, some skin tones, blender, black and 5 of them I had to order seperatedly. Really I know hardly anything about useing copics. Before now I have been using color pencils.

So that's how the colorless blender works!!! D8 I always thought you did the colors first, then the blender...and then my art was always messed up and faded looking...so yes, I'm very glad you made this!

That, and I love all the tips and information. It's one of the only marker tutorials I can follow! Thanks for making this for us all!

hi really great tutorial! verry helpfull
so you use copic paper too so i wanted to ask
copic paper is marker paper right? so bleed proof
is it still good for bleding?
i bought normal marker paper but i cant blend my colors because the ink dries up too fast.
is copic paper better for blending?

thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

finni In reply to mysterychao [2007-08-05 19:12:03 +0000 UTC]

I just simply have to draw really really fast. The ink drying really fast is going to happen pretty much on all papers, and using a better paper quality will probably give you an extra second or two. If your ink is drying really fast, try putting more ink onto the paper (mine always bleeds all the way through on the back side, that's how much ink there is) and it's a little easier to blend. Otherwise, having that extra layer of colorless blender is really helpful.

Just work quickly!! The colors are mutable only for a short period of time so it really depends on sleight of hand.

Hope that helps!

Well, even when I have also Copic paper I would like to add that since I usually do use normal print paper it's not the smarter idea to use it as tester under the original... because the colors under soaks through and then I got the blue smudge on Naruto's face! DX
Lol whatever. Nice tutorial

And I'm very glad I actually know what to do with the colorless blender now. xD; Thank you!

finni In reply to gloomygir [2007-06-11 16:33:12 +0000 UTC]

See the reply I made to a previous comment here: [link]

Basically, Copics and Prismas are nearly the same in terms of marker ink (alcohol-based) but differ vastly on application and thus coloring method. The soft brush-tip characteristic of Copic markers allows the user to control how much ink is to be placed on the page, like a real brush, and makes blending colors far easier than with Prismacolor markers, which has the normal felt marker tip. However, the Prisma marker is good at laying down solid colors because of its soft broad brush, whereas Copic uses a chisel tip for that end. So if you like to do marker work where the colors are distinct and shading looks like cel-shading, then by all means there is not much advantage to Copic markers except color selection and saturation. But if you're like me and enjoy blending colors together, Copics work a lot better.

Hope that helps a little!

thanks for the tutorial- I had no idea about putting colorless blender down beforehand, I know another commenter did the same thing I did, and tried to put it on top xD Copics are so expensive though.. /sob Will probably increase my collection one at a time..

could I possibly ask your opinion on the Prismacolor/Copic debate? What I've heard (and seems most true to me) is Prismas have more colors? But Copics have better skin tones.. I just know I'm really fond of the Copic brush tip now :>

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

finni In reply to glitz [2007-06-06 04:28:57 +0000 UTC]

In terms of color selection I think Copics and Prismas a pretty evenly matched. I'm not too sure though, so that could just be from what I've seen for sale. Copics do have a large array of skin tones but the main difference between their inks is Prismas tend to be bolder, more vibrant while Copics are a bit duller and lighter. For me, I prefer the lighter look of Copics, since it allows me to work with my canvas color (white) a lot better. Of course there's the difference of the tips (which I love dearly and it's pretty much the main reason I choose Copics over Prismas), allowing Copics to have more versitality but Prismas winning overall, for me, in terms of laying down large areas of flat colors. Unfortunately there's also thte cost to consider, being that Copics are vastly more expensive than Prismas, which makes my wallet very sad. : (

Eep, I hope that wasn't too lengthy!
