Description Made with the image drawn for Kitten on RagnaInfo.net, one of the winners of my auction, which is a very long and complicated story but anyways.

I was asked to take in progress photos of my marker work and I decided to just make a tutorial out of the photos. This is the first tutorial I've made like this for deviantART and it took a full 4 hours to put together, so I hope people like it and I would love to have some feedback. The image is of Kitten's huntress Kari Evelyn.

Are you using the brush tip side? Try working the ink into the paper more if you're having streaking issues, or possibly slow down a little when covering large areas. I'm not sure what other advice I can give for streaking, because the alcohol-based copic markers tend to be very good at blending and I don't see streaking often unless I am using the chisel side or I'm just drawing too fast.

your advice doesn't work.

Well then, I'm not sure what else I can do to help over the internet. It's easier to show in person. Did you try doing two layers of ink?

yes but only for shadow.

Like I said in the tutorial, if you are only using a single layer or a light layer of ink on the image, you should try putting down the colorless blender first to help the colors blend together, avoiding streaking. Did you try that?

Regardless, you should always use a different color or a mix of different colors for shading, as using just a darker more saturated version of the base color makes for very awkward shadows. If this confuses you, I'd suggest picking up a book on color theory.

so you put the colourless blender on BEFORE you add colour because i always put it on after and it ruined my nibs and made no difference...

I'm getting my 72 set A Copic Sketch markers tonight at 7:00 when my dad comes home. Which color set do you use? A, B, or C? or, did you just collect them over time?
I'm a bit nervous to use them for the first time. Do you mind if I show my work to you from time to time for critiqes on my coloring?

Great guide

I have to say, putting down the colorless blender first really makes a difference.
I shall be referring to this from time to time.

I think this'll help me a lot ^^
But what do you mean with 'the white pen'?
Do yoou mean the colorsless blender, or is it a special copic?

I think it means a white gel pen, or white out.

I'm glad this tutorial helped! It really is difficult to work with so few colors... but blending colors like this really does save money in the long run since those markers are so expensive. >_<

Betelgeuse-Edo In reply to finni [2009-10-26 19:50:29 +0000 UTC]

I know ^^
Some of my friend gave them to me for my birthday because I cannot buy them... But they're really amazing. I tried also some water colours, but they're more difficult to put on the sheet and to mix togheder... usually the only thing I can do with them is the classical manga shading... no more XD
Thanks again!

Actually, because the Copic marker tip is so brushlike, I find myself mixing markers with watercolors together to get a unique feel -- it does require me to work on a thicker paper (usually Bristol board), but it allows a little more flexibility for me in terms of color palette.

I'm not sure if you went through the rest of my gallery, but this image [link] was done as a mix of Copic and watercolors, and they blend so well together that it's hard to tell which was used where.

Experiment and see! (:

Betelgeuse-Edo In reply to finni [2009-10-27 13:52:54 +0000 UTC]

I'll for sure!
The most difficult thing, for me, is skin... Pink is so common, and makes all my drawings looking like dools. I like to make it mixing yellow and pink, or better orange, yellow and maron. I know it's strange but I took the idea from cosmetics... Make up, sometimes, is so usefull XD
Then you also draw so good... Mmh, I'll learn and I'll do my best to copy you!
Thanks again for all those tips!

I just got me some Copics. This was helpful thanks. Any info on nib types and what they are best for? I LOVE the brush nib, but it also has the edge and I have some really pointy ones that I'm not sure how I'm supposed to color with that.lol.

Thank you.

what kind of copic markers have the brush tip?
because i am getting the copic sketch markers and i have pretty much no idea what kind of tips they have.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

finni In reply to OH-gumdrops [2009-08-07 18:23:20 +0000 UTC]

Sketch and Ciao markers are the ones that have the brush tip. So, the ones you are getting do have a brush tip.

OH-gumdrops In reply to finni [2009-08-07 19:29:40 +0000 UTC]

OH, what difference is there between the sketch markers and the ciao markers?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

finni In reply to OH-gumdrops [2009-08-07 23:07:12 +0000 UTC]

Ciao markers are smaller (circular tube versus oval) and therefore hold less ink, and are incompatible with the Copic airbrush system. Otherwise, they're exactly the same -- same tips and same ink.

Thank you very very much for this tutorial! ^_^ Being looking for at least 6 months now for a tutorial where someone creates realistically coloured skin, without the necessity for E000 (Living in the UK sucks)

...Now just to hope that E51 is a good enough substitute for E50... I'm broke

when you use the colorless blender
doesn't the other marker colors
get mixed into the blender
and mess everything up??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

finni In reply to XxMOLDY-LiiLPUddINxX [2009-03-02 00:50:23 +0000 UTC]

You have to be careful with the colorless blender just like with the markering, of course. If you don't color out of the lines, why would you colors out of the blending area with the blender?

But no, the blender won't mess other colors up if you're careful. The same thing goes with all artistic procedures, I think.

okay :]
i just didn't know if the tip of the blender
would be coated in other colors or not.
i might just stick to colored pencils
but i wanted some future reference for copics ^o^

finni In reply to XxMOLDY-LiiLPUddINxX [2009-03-02 10:35:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's what you meant.
Well, if you read the tutorial, the colorless blender is put down on the paper BEFORE the colors, so there's no way that the blender could get other colors on it. Otherwise, yeah, it would probably get some residues.

Hope that helps!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

XxMOLDY-LiiLPUddINxX In reply to finni [2009-03-03 00:18:51 +0000 UTC]

ohhhh, okay!
so the colors will blend decently
if you use the colorless blender first, i assume?
cause when i used copics from my friend
EVERY color blended and got all messed up lol.

yeah, that helps a lot!

okay, just one more question:
where did you get your copics?
i know we probably don't have the same stores
but i wanna know just in case =3
