I really like the whole appearance of it and the colours u used
but im slightly confused by a few things. What is it the significance of the key and keyhole?

overall, i really like this.
I think the light in the lower right hand (while well done) distracts from what the focal point should be. I'm assuming that the transaction between the two characters is the most important element here. The light on the fish also seems a bit strong too. If both of these elements were a cooler color they would not compete with the central characters.
Other than that, its looking quite good.

Hmm, good point. I was hoping those two lights would balance each other out and direct the eye right in the middle of them, right to the key. I might have to go back to previous version of cooler grey instead. I was wondering about that pink-ish overlay on the bottom right.

Thanks! This'll give me something to play with in the future.

Love this. Very unique and lovely. Even though it's so different, it still seems very fairytale, you know? I can totally imagine this illustrating a children's book. ^_^

Using both of them is fun. And gives great results. Like this one.
Did you install open raster plugin for Gimp?

Oooh, no I haven't. Usually I just flatten to pngs when I'm about to switch to Gimp or vice versa.

Off to install it, maybe now I'll use the layers more across the apps.
