"I don't understand."

Kovu watched as his sister's eyes spilled over with tears. The young lion had seen many things, but had never seen Vitani cry. The siblings had sat in a quiet vigil all night after their mother's death, and as the sun broke over the horizon, the lioness beside him could no longer hold her grief. And yet, her face still twisted into something ugly, furious yet devastated. Kovu found himself at a loss for words.

Silence again, broken only by stifled sobs as Vitani tried her best to stop the tears, but they continued anyway, dripping freely against her paws and the lush earth below. "She was terrible, Kovu. S-She hurt us. N-Nuka. Nuka, he..." She had to stop to sob again, as the vision of their eldest brother flashed in her mind, begging for Zira's attention as his crushed body gave in.

" What was any of this for, Kovu? W-What about us? Are we supposed to just move on, and... and be happy?"

"I don't think so." Kovu finally replied, his tone soft and gentle, something that Simba had shown him in his moment of sorrow. "I think it's okay to hurt, Vitani. I.... I'm not the best with saying things, you know? But.... Zira was terrible, but she was still our Mother."

Vitani's fur brushed his as the lioness leaned against him, burying the side of her face into Kovu's mane as she cried. Kovu gave her a gentle lick on the forehead, hoping that some amount of affection would help her. It was something that neither of them were ever given as cubs, not from her.

"I'm going to miss her too." Kovu whispered.

"Kovu?"

"Yes, Vitani?"

"I'm glad you're my brother."

".... I'm glad you're my sister. We'll stick together, okay?"

"Okay."
