Description
Work In Progress ShotsAuugh, I've pretty much had enough of this painting, so I finished it up somewhat hurriedly so I could just get it out of the way and move on with my life artistically!
So here it is! I learned a lot by doing this painting, including working out different techniques for painting grass and tree leaves! Which I ended up attempting to paint more than once until I found some more pleasing look I could settle on. x_x
Thank you very much to everyone who helped critique this along the way! There were probably some things I couldn't manage to fix with this image due to my own artistic limitations, but the knowledge you've shared with me will certainly help with future paintings!

Thanks! And yeah, you're right, that tree does look rushed...! I ended up doing the leaves on it probably a number of days or weeks after I did the main tree leaves at the top of the image and sort of forgot what the technique I had been using was like...! I think I was also getting a bit impatient, though I didn't really notice how rushed it looked until you pointed it out! I'll try to be more careful next time.
I'm glad you like the textures and think the atmospheric perspective looks good! Thanks for taking the time to write that!

Aw, I like the concept: a dragon begging. XD Usually you see dragons shown in positions of power, blasting their way to what they want. This is a nice contrast. I also like how the girl is holding her cup away, unafraid of the dragon. (I see it as maybe she had befriended the dragon a while ago and now they are close buddies. So close in fact that she knows he won't harm her to get her drink. He leisurely tried to sip some, but she figured it out, so now he's resorted to begging like a puppy.) I love the expressions on each face! So priceless and wonderfully done! XD

This is absolutely adorable.
The dragon looks fabulous, and the color scheme is equally great - the blue dragon is a nice contrast to the warm colors of the background.

Awww... fallen in love with this digital illustration! Your digital coloring skill is simply amazing... love every single detail in the background: the rocks, the water, the grass, the leaves... everything looks so real, so natural >w< And specially like the drawing's general warm lighthing, 'cause it gives it a dream-like and ethereal touch.
The characters... well, they couldn't be cooler in my opinion! I'd like to pet that blue dragon, he/she looks so funny and friendly
But most important thing here is that you've learned a lot using different and new coloring techniques
I am an apprentice myself and still a bit far from this level, so I cannot give a good critique... only can admire your amount of skill, and of course have faved this one not only because the picture is so stunning blablabla... but to have it as a reference if I have to make a digital painting of a forest in a further future >_<
Congratulations on this illustration then, keep up the great work!

Aww, such a sweet moment! I love how it all kind of fades away into mist, almost. You can obviously see all the hard work and effort that went into making this piece!
The textures all flow into one beautiful piece of art and give the painting so much more depth. The anatomy is wonderful, and the expressions look even better. I'm DEFINETLY gonna have to fave this!
It looks absolutely amazing and is absolutely breathtaking, Firequill!

THIS IS SO PRETTY WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN. Omg I loved seeing it come to life with the WIPS. omg that detail HOW DO YOU EVEN HAVE THE PATIENCE? Guh I love the little sprinklings of warm leafies in the grass and all those tiny little grass blades and those ROCKS omg the rocks are so DETAILED! How do you even do all this sfvbgf plus all the trees have leaves and the pines are needley and ugh this is just the cutest little fall forest.
The person and the dragon look AWESOME too! I love the storybook feel of the dragon's anatomy. Especially his head. It's like you yanked him out of some fairy tale book or something! I love all the oranges you snuck into his shadings too. And the human is loovely! I like how her red jacket makes her stand out against that massive blue dragon. Plus I love her expression. And her mittens. I want her mittens.
Have I mentioned how much I adore your artings? SO much I adore your artings |: <33333!

Haha, THANK YOOOOUUU. I was struggling to have the patience, so I ended up working on it very sporadically. XD
But I was just SO DETERMINED to try and make it into like... 'my best painting yet' or something, so I MADE myself have the patience to paint and repaint bits and I was creating new layers left and right to experiment with new things and it was so disorganised and and and...!@1 I had FUN painting things like the rocks and the grass and stuff though! I mean, rocks seem boring, but I swear there's a whole secret world of excitement hiding within them!1
That dragon's head was inspired by saw sharks , apparently! I'd never even heard of them before, but I saw this drawing of one here on deviantART and looked it up on Google and then I wanted to draw something with a similar head.
I am a happy little thing knowing you like my art as much as you do!1 So THANK YOU! And THANK YOU ALSO for your lovely comments!

I love the dragon the best. Your interpretation of the dragon anatomy really works for me. If I were to draw a dragon (or model it in 3D) this is as close to a rendition as I would go off of. And thanks for giving him, what appears to me anyway, long fur hairs on its tail and neck to a creature who would otherwise be scaled.
As far as what she is drinking- hot chocolate is not the first thing that came to my mind, lol.
And most important I appreciate the humor you have instilled in this work. Kinda like an Aesop's fable.

Thank you! I'm glad you like the dragon's anatomy in this! Especially since it's so different to how I normally draw dragons, but I guess I wanted a break from 'the usual' this time. And I'm glad you appreciate the humour! I'd like to paint more images that are meant to 'tell a story' rather than just show a design like how I've done in this painting.

This is really good! It's come a really long way ^^. One crit I would have is that the background is not very consistent in detail, which makes the focus a bit odd. I love the roughness of the grass and the trees, it really makes the dragon and character stand out . The rocks are suddenly a bit refined and round though, and they stand out awkwardly as a result.
Composition wise you're not using the canvas to it's fullest; you could have cut off a large part of that right side and nobody would really have missed it, because we're really only looking at the dragon and girl (or rather, that's where we want to look), so the right part is kind of hogging up space and attention for no good reason. Could also have used a bit more loose splattering of the water; but that's a nitpick.
Overall this works really well as an illustration, lovely mood, funny and cute story, good atmospheric depth . Particularly love the expression on the girl's face! Keep up the good work!

Firequill In reply to CaraidArt [2011-12-21 21:45:16 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Yeah, the rocks were one of the earlier parts of the background I started painting and I sort of got lost in my enthusiasm to be painting and overdid the detail, which I sort of regretted when I realised I would have a really hard time if I tried to make other parts of the painting equally detailed. x_x
I sort of painted a bit over them to make them seem at least slightly less out of place, but I'll be more careful the next time I paint a scene...!
But yes! Thank you! I'll keep what you said in mind for future paintings!

Aw man, I love the rocks. Cutting them outta the canvas would be a travesty. To me they look like human skulls which adds an air of mystery to balance out the cuteness of the work.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CaraidArt In reply to hairyskeleton [2011-12-22 10:27:22 +0000 UTC]
I don't think they were supposed to be human skulls though . The key to making a strong composition is to be conscious of where you put the important elements in the picture and how you want the viewer's eye to look around the canvas. I am personally constantly looking at the girl's face, then the dragon's face, down along the dragon's body to the flowers in the grass below them and back to the girl. I have to actually tear myself away from that pleasant viewing cycle to look at the rocks, which are nice, but not an important part of the composition, which is a big shame because they are nicely rendered! A way to fix the composition therefor, is either cut off the rocks, or position the dragon and girl differently so that the rocks become part of the cycle
.

hairyskeleton In reply to CaraidArt [2011-12-23 06:17:22 +0000 UTC]
I don't agree. Composition is subjective from one person to another, therefore there are no rules. In my mind there is no 'fixing a composition', as this has no meaning for me. But if it works for you, then okays.
