I'm in a pokemon mood again, so I drew my Zorua character from an RP :3So here he is having a nice walk during the night and enjoying the silence of a nighttime forest. Then he just stopped by and begun to admire the beauty of the full moon.

Taking referrence from other people's pics is a good way to learn stuff :3 I have "studied" the pics of the artists I admire many times, while I draw ^^

Well first of all.. the basics... what program do you use?

On that one picture you liked, I was still purely using Photoshop CS3. But in my most recent pics I've moved to Painttool SAI for most of the coloring and inking process. As for the sketch, I do it traidionally as often as possible and the scan the picture. Drawing by your own hand is just (for me) so much easier than with a tablet. Though I think I did that Jolteon pic purely on computer though o.o

That means i should be able to do it! at the min i draw my drawings on paper scan them and then colour them on Paint tool SAI... How do you do the colouring and shading? Do you have any like plugins or extra brushes?

No :3 I just use the Brush and Waterbrush. I do the base color for all parts of the pic and then I make a Clipping Layer from that color layer and do the shading there. I do the rough shading with the Brush and then smoothen it up with the Waterbrush. This is how the result looks: [link]

so its just simply the brush and waterbrush... Thanks, ill need to practice with them... i don't really know how to use them well at the min...
Do you just use a mouse while colouring or do you use a tablet for colouring and shading?

Yeah, it's good to practice :3 Also make sure there are no different colors next to eachother. They will start to mix up and that is no good. So put different colors and parts to different layers (or at least I do).
I have a tablet :3 I couldn't do this with a mouse X3 Or at least it would take much longer.

So your drawings have loads of layers? and you prevent the paints merging? I don't do that... so that one of the things i have to improve on... but the edges of individual layers want to be smooth don't they? is there any specifics or is it just put lighter colours on top?
And what tablet would you recommend? as i plan on getting one soon

Yeah, they have quite many :3 For example, this Zorua pic had a layer for Zorua's purple fur, his dark purple and red fur, eyes and mouth, trees, moon and the sky. And of course, each layer has its own Clipping Layer called "Shading" :3
Well, I'm no expert, but Bamboo in general is considered a good Tablet mark :3 I myself have Bamboo Fun: Pen & Touch. It's small and easy to use ^^

Right, do you mind if i try and replicate this drawing, and if i try and follow the steps that you have told me, could i then compare it to yours and see how close i am to your style, and you would probably see where i went wrong and how to improve better than just talking. Id submit it in scraps and as soon as you'd seen it i would remove it. I just think that you would be able to see where i went wrong more than what i could because you already did the drawing....
If you don't want me to though and prefer me to do my own lineart and not steal (Mwhaa ha haa! im evil) your work, then show you that, id be fine with that too... I just really want to learn your style is all!
