Considering the scientist was already expecting "guests", I would guess that the table was already prepped and ready. As for touching the table itself, I imagine it to be a benign taser. As soon as they touch the table they go limp. How much of their body has to touch it for that effect? Your guess is as good as mine.

I was envisioning a forcefield around the table area (By the steps, floor-to-ceiling) that would only allow inorganics through, but would trap organic beings there. Would make 4076's job easier...
