Description

"All is twisted in the blighted woods. Everything is infected, cursed. A Pathfinder keeps the ways safe for travelers and towns alike. There are far too few Pathfinders these days. The woods are overrun with prowlers. The blight encroaches ever further on civilization. More and more travelers never reach their destination. Still, there are those who keep the fire safe to light the path ahead."

It has been crazy busy in my life recently. Still, I tried to find some time to draw. This is one of the main characters for the comic my husband and I are planning. I feel like with every drawing, with every word added to the world-building, we pin down more and more of our world and the plot. Also, I really feel like I've pinned down the artstyle and aesthetic I want to use for the comic. I can't wait to start showing it to you all.

This piece was created in Photoshop using a Microsoft Surface Pro 3. It presents original characters, creatures, and the world of In the Shadow of the Ancients. ItSotA is a comic project that I am working on with my husband, based on a tabletop roleplaying game campaign we ran over the course of years. It was a multifaceted adventure, that spanned multiple groups and branching storylines, and utilized Dungeons & Dragons, Dungeon World, Torchbearer, and Pathfinder.

Thank you again!
I'm really finding my style as I explore the world I'm creating with my husband.
Hopefully it makes a good comic.

Nice! Just curious, what are those creatures hiding behind those trees, the ones that the Pathfinder is facing? They look quite fascinating.

Thank you so much!
They are prowlers, though they were once human.
Dangerous creatures. Their infection spread out from the Chasm of the Abyss.

Cool! Me likey dangerous creatures. Especially the infectious kind (though in the fantasy sense of course; real-life would be extremely terrible). It's got something to do with those leech-like thingies on the back of their necks, right? Is it reversible, though?

Sorry if I seem unusually intrigued - I do like fictional lore, especially regarding creatures, like how they tick. Would be fun if there was an info sheet about them. Or is there one at hand...?

It's sort of like an infection. A black tar-like substance is transferred between the infected to a healthy individual through a bite. It's actually a transference of a microscopic colony.

The micro organisms are virus-like but they're sort of a hive community. The infection has an intelligence. It spreads, sometimes over the course of a few years, but in the end the infected will always become a prowler. There's no way to cure the infection, only slow it down.

At that stage, a growth forms at the base of the brain stem. It is the hive mind, and it completely controls the body of the host. The host passes on. A fully realized prowler is very dangerous because of how fast it moves, and how quickly it can regenerate. The only way to permanently kill one is to sever the head, and burn both it and the body in consecrated flames.

One of the main characters of our comic is infected. She's looking for a cure.

Even more cool! Loving the written detail of this infection. Is this information on an art piece? Like an infographic warning the dangers of such infection or a comic strip demonstrating the progress of an infected individual? Now that would be awesome.

Oh noes! Well, that'll make quite the conflict to drive the story forward - the character struggling to search far and wide for the cure of an incurable infection. She'll face enemies along the way, but none more threatening than the enemy that slowly consumes her and her humanity. Yup, definitely sounds like a fun story! Will you be submitting your story here? I'd definitely look forward to that.

Interestingly, or perhaps coincidentally, one of my main characters will also suffer some sort of infection in the current rendition of her story, hehe.

An infographic sounds like a cool idea. It's not really in my wheelhouse though. I might give it a try. I have drawn the various stages of infection at some point. We'll see. Astor where we'll post the comic, I'm uncertain. We're still figuring out if we want to try and submit it on Comixology or create a webpage to post it as a weekly webcomic.

Love the deep colors here and the composition. I like where the Pathfinder is, center but not taking away from everything else. I look forward to seeing more. Good luck with your plans! Thank you for submitting to

Thank you so much!! I'm glad her positioning worked out, I wanted to place her in a way that made her seem dwarfed by what she was up against. But it sure isn't gonna stop her from fighting
I can't wait to share more!

Thank you!! I really wanted to give this one a creepy atmosphere! I feel like at times my colors and composition lean a lot toward bright, happy and safe, so I needed to go "darker" with this to make it work in my mind

Ah I see! You certainly created such an atmosphere It's great to challenge yourself to do something different, isn't it?

It's a pain to challenge yourself... but it's worth it. We don't grow by being comfortable and doing the same things.
