Description
This was a piece which broke a lot of boundaries for me and I'm still super happy with how it came out. I always find creating scenes quite difficult, and I struggled with the colour scheme here but taking a break and coming back to it with fresh eyes always helps!
1 - I knew I wanted to paint the Rex, but wasn't quite sure of the scene yet. Just getting a super basic idea down using values.
2 - Sticking with just values, getting an idea for my overall light source. Keeping it really simple. Decided to have foreground Struthis running away.
3 - Not sure what I was doing with the colours here. Bit of a mess of everything and nothing was really working. I just tried not to get hung up on it and carried on as you can always tweak colours later.
4 - Needed the ground to gel more with the colours in the sky so went for an ochre which really worked. But still I was very uncertain with the image as a whole. I remember leaving it like this for a couple of weeks as I wasn't sure how to continue.
5 - Came back to it, tilted the composition to add dynamism and resketched over the Rex as it felt too plastic and static. Making the Rex in mid-stride really helped with this. Started thinking about foreground vegetation to add another plane to the image, with it almost acting like a border up the left side.
6 - Started properly detailing. At this stage I pretty much flatten everything and just kept working on top.
7 - Further detailing and contrast tweaks.
8 - Final touches and detailing. I pushed out the blues using a gradient overlay on the 'lighter colour' layer mode, which really helped contrast with the ochre and make everything pop.
Static step by step is here if you guys want a better look -
Also, do let me know if this is of any help to you guys? I usually always save little process screenies. I would like to do proper tutorials at some point but right now I'm no where near good/confident enough with my process!

After comparing animated with static, I think I like the animated one better because it's easier to see all changes taking place.Β The description of thought and work process in the comments is really great: I think a lot of artists need to know how others think through the painting and that painting over and fixing things is a completely natural part of the craft that they shouldn't be afraid of.Β I've seen some tutorial-makes add such thought processes as speech bubbles of sorts to the animated steps - helps to tie the thoughts to the picture right away . All in all, I think your steps are very helpful.Β Thanks for sharing!

I try and do static as well now as I had a few people in the past state that the GIF is too quick. But I do agree, I do prefer the GIF as it's easier to see the changes between each step. And yes, totally! I see so many processes which are just so smooth and organised and mine is just nothing like that! Haha, maybe it will be at some point? Thank you!

I think you got the most important things down though - the rest is just fine-tuning ^_^

That's nice of you for sharing. It helped me visualize how we can't skip creating the structure first.

I'm too all over the place, haha! I never really know where I'm going when I start painting and sometimes pieces just look terrible and I'm never sure why

They were referencing the final line of this artist's post, "I would like to do proper tutorials at some point but right now I'm no where near good/confident enough with my process!"
Very good rendering of a jurassic scene, always fun to see the process an artist makes and the changes over time from start to finish.
