Czech students win EU contest for anti-discrimination billboard

Brussels - Young Czech artists won the final of the contest for the best billboard on "EU and Non-Discrimination" staged by the European Commission on Monday.

The contest was held in two age categories, from 12 to 14 years and from 15 to 18 years.

Czech students of the High Artistic School from Liberec, North Bohemia, were successful in the latter category.

Some 6,000 billboards were sent to the contest whose results were proclaimed today.

Filip Menšl, the main author of the design, said he was motivated by the idea that there was not a single, but a number of discriminations, not only racial, but also for belief, sex and sexual orientation.

As a result, he selected a representative from each of the discriminated groups who says in what he differs in a stylised, united graphic form.

"Great emphasis was laid on the man who reads it as everyone on the billboard says: What type of man are you? They actually show that the reader is one of them," Menšl said.

The billboard is accompanied by the slogan "Everyone is different, but we are all humans" and "Everyone wants to be happy, everyone is on the same planet."

The contest was held in all 27 EU countries and was declared at the initiative of EC deputy chairman Franco Frattini on this European Year of Equal Opportunities for All. )
