Description
One of the recent specimens from the paleontology collections room where I work. There are so many neat things that every now and then, I go in with my camera and take photos. This one is the primary reason why I brought out my camera. My head boss had showed this to me and I couldn't wait to catch a picture. It is a recent hammerhead shark skull. Width across the hammer is about 7.5in. I didn't take it out of the box as it is rather fragile (the skin/tissue is flaky) and I didn't want to damage it.

one does not simply fossilize soft tissue...

I thought they had cartridge for bones....? That's just my very limited shark knowledge...

For the most part yes, but the "hammer" is more calcified than most of the bones. Also, this is a dried recent specimen, so there is a bit of dried cartelage and flesh bits on it as well.
