Description Not even a vacation can stop me from vectoring This was a pretty quick vector that I worked on intermittently whenever I got some downtime. Here's Twilight sparkle giving Cadance a comforting look in A Canterlot Wedding part 2. This was probably one of the most heart-wrenching scenes from the entire series for me, the expressions on Twi's face definitely tweaked my emotions. As always, feel free to critique, and I hope you like it! Svg can be found here: [link]

No guarantees that I'll be able to get another vector done in the next week and a half, but I'll definitely try to get a few done when I get back

Edit: Fixed her mane stripe, new svg can be found here: [link]

If you do use this (or any of my other artwork), please let me know so I can check out what you make with it!

Nice vector work, very even strokes.
The only thing I spotted is that the right eye (her left one) is layered over the head outline. Usually, there is a small gap between the eye and the head outline from this perspective or the outline is layered over the eye. And the eyelid over the same eye is a little bit edgy, the passing to the first eyelash is usually really smooth.

Thanks!! From this angle, I'm not sure what the general consensus is about the layering with that stroke. I tend to think about what a pony would look like in 3D, in which case her eye would be slightly sticking out from her head and be layered on top of that stroke. I've done it both ways and seen many artists do the same, so I think it's OK, but I could be way off Also, for there to be a gap between her eye and the stroke Twilight should be facing a bit more towards us (since then we could see the other edge of her eyeball).

I see what you're saying about the eyebrow, I'll take a closer look at it when I get some more time Thanks for the constructive critique!!

I stated this reminding a scene from a similar angle where I could the see the gap, but it might have been not exactly the same angle. I agree, with a clearly visible gap between head stroke and eye it would look a bit odd here.

Yeah, I mean the eye does look a bit out of place, it was like that in my reference, but the bottom of that stroke looks a bit thin... ~mehoep offered a suggestion as to one possibility as to how it could look, so I'll definitely revisit it when I have some time Again, thanks for all the help, and thanks for helping out ~EpIcLuKo8D getting started on vectoring!

I just got another screencap in good quality, here it's adjacent. No overlay, no gap. I guess the show animation isn't always perfect.
I always assumed helping people getting started in vectoring is one of the Vector Club's purposes.

No, I'm doing it with mouse and keyboard. Tablets are for drawing, but not so useful for vectoring.

man how do ya do it?

Derpwave In reply to LukeWarmLukeArts [2012-05-31 14:56:59 +0000 UTC]

Start with tracing. Take a screenshot in a good resolution with a pony in the foreground, paste it in Inkscape/Photoshop/AI.
Have some tutorials: [link]

You're welcome.
Whenever you are struggling or want some critique on your art, feel free to ask somebody from , they will help you.
I guess you are using Inkspace (it's recommended for vectoring), but since I don't use it, it's unlikely that I can help you with program-specific problems.
If you are using Photoshop or have some general questions, feel fre to ask.

thank you very much! i will attempt vectoring with Inkspace first and, if it does'nt work out, i'll switch to Photoshop.

i'm pretty sure that it will. i had my fair share of doubts about inkscape but after the first few pics i suggested it to anyone who wants to start vectoring. becase it's free and got all the features you need to make a really good vector ;>

i tired it and it works pretty good. but im working on a really big movie/comic rite now so i cant really focus on vectoring rite now.

nice

and btw: y u upload to mediafire instead of sta.sh? รดO

and btw btw: concerning that eye over stroke thingie timmy-fooba mentioned: the way the eye covers the stroke seems legit but i would suggest to move the bottom nodes of the stroke to the right or tilt the eye to the left, so that the eye still covers the stroke but the lower end of the stroke is not quite as thin?
messed around in the .svg and i think it looks quite decent that way :>

but then again... that's probably not true to the source.
so many choices, oh such riches of derpy

seems i need some more coffee to underp my brain ... again

flutterguy317 In reply to mehoep [2012-06-01 00:02:17 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I'm not sure why I upload to mediafire and not sta.sh... I guess it's because I started doing it that way in the beginning so now I'm used to it (and drag-and-drop works on mediafire but not sta.sh for me), but maybe I'll give sta.sh another try Also, I'll take another look at that eye-stroke interaction thingie, I really am not sure about how it should look, I was pretty much copying the reference there, but when I get the time I'll give it another look-see Your example looks better, but I get the feeling that it should curve out just a bit more (but yeah, the bottom of the eyeball should probably be where you have it). Thanks for all the critiquing!

btw, you're amazing for continuing to use

> I really am not sure about how it should look

me neither, but i see this as the funny part of vectoring

>but I get the feeling that it should curve out just a bit more

i thought of that too... but the worst thing that could happen while making it rounder is that you need to adjust the fill afterwards, so it shouldn't be a big deal x)

Heheh, I know vectoring is a perfectionists art, but I sometimes get the feeling that a lot is left up to interpretation (such as this issue). I'll definitely take another look at my vector and play around with it when I get some more time... Thanks for all the advice
