Anyways, this is how i do it. I pretty much took bits of advice i scraped from across the internet to develop my own method to doing this... it's probably not the only way to get transparent backgrounds, but it's the way I do it, so... it works for me^^'
If you finish a project and go 'oh crap, the parts I meant to be white in the picture turned transparent too!', no worries, just place a new layer between the transparent layer and your art and fill the white spaces in.
Also, since SAI detects the pixel opacity, it's a good idea to color in white behind parts of your image that aren't completely saturated with color.
Aaaaand you don't have to flatten your image first. But a few times, when i finished this process, there were odd white chunks that I couldn't get to go away, and when I flattened the image and THEN went through this process, it resolved itself perfectly.
If you have any more questions, I can try to help, but I am by no means an expert. Just another learner who found a neat trick i wanna share^^
Hope this helps~<3

The thing doesn't pop up, so I'm looking in the comments and people are just saying that your version is too old if the window doesn't pop up. Does anybody have a link or smth where I could download a newer version? I got my version from this thread:Β Paint Tool Sai Not Working With Wacom Alternative?

quick question: how do you make the lines vary in thickness in the drawing without having to switch sizes every two seconds?Β is there a specific brush for that? :0

The image was made and saved in MS Paint, i opened it in SAI to give it a transparent background. Nothing i have tried so far has worked, even putting a layer under the first layer and coloring it in a different color, that doesn't work, it just stays a white background on the original layer. I don't know how to put this, but... i think the white background might be physically aved to the original image... Because i opened it, instead of drawing in in SAI... please help?

Then export as .PSD, and use another program like Photoshop or Gimp so you can then export as a .PNG and have that transparent background. That's how I did it in the past.

Transparency saved from a PNG file from Gimp, is opening in Sai with a solid white background . ? Β I want to save the file from Gimp into Sai with the transparent background intact . Any advice ?Β
Once the image is exported from Gimp to the desk top in PNG, the transparency is there, but once in Sai, its gone. I could have sworn i did this before, its not working now .

Lol. Late reply.
But SAI CAN'T view transparency!
You can only view transparency only when you export the file.
