Right-click Save As. Definitely.
Very helpful, very eloquent tutorial that actually tries to explain the how's and why's. I miss that in many others. After reading the part about erasure shading I went to your gallery and took a gander and sure enough, you do employ it to great effect.
Now all I need is a tut describing lighting and I'm all set to do something that actually looks like something.

Yeah, feel free to save down and stuff. Just remember where you got it from? XD;;

I really try to only do things when I understand why I'm doing them. I mean, not just in art, but in science and history and stuff, too.

Pssh. Lol. Erasure - my secret is totally out. XD; I have a little tin, like, for mints, that I emptied out and keep extra graphite, erasers, my tortillion, and a pencil sharpener. Travel kit. XD

Right... eheh. I'm not the best for that. i know there's an AMAZING one out there - I've read it, but i don't remember a) who wrote it or b) where it is. It goes minimally into light physics which is great.

Hey, *I* couldn't see it coming! XD Thanks so much for this. It's really informative and I feel like I really learned a lot. I like to consider myself at least a little learned in the areas of art, but in the end, I'm not. XD Erasers, pencils, paper, and techniques... I feel like I've been taught valuable information. Will definitely be sticking this in the faves! I want to practice with this medium more...

Thanks again for uploading this. :3

lol ive been doing my work in mechanical pencil to start off (i always used to just leave it in pencil but my scanner doesnt pick it up so i have to ink) and all but i never shade it right so when i get to inking it in it gets all messed up ... so maybe this and the ones to follow will help me out. so i say thank you for posting this and add it to my favorites ^_^

actualy i WAS wondering what inking markers you prefer ... you have probably stated it before but i missed it ... thanks agian

fongmingyun In reply to xo0brokenwings0ox [2006-07-24 19:43:19 +0000 UTC]

No problem. Me, I prefer felt-tip pens due to their balance between brush-like lines and even technical-pen lines. I use Sakura Microns because they come in a variety of sizes. Also, I use Staedlater fineliners - they last longer than Microns because they are better build quality (ink quality however, is the same, both archival) and thus they tend not to dry out or clog up as fast. I've never tried Copic multiliners.

Great stuff It's nice to see a tutorial on natural media for once, and this one's very helpful and informative.

fongmingyun In reply to tamerofhorses [2006-07-24 18:06:31 +0000 UTC]

I feel like a lot of natural media (nto to mention CG) tutorials are more like walkthroughs than anything on how an artist did a certain piece. I was trying to do something idfferent. Thank you for the fave.

Lol. Really? I'm no substitute for a real education. Hell, I elarned all that from real drawing class... XD; But I don't teach you how to practice.

JemCope In reply to fongmingyun [2006-07-24 01:43:46 +0000 UTC]

My teacher doesn't take her drawing classes seriously. ....wait, she doesn't take any of her classes seriously. But this is about what I learned. x] .....she didn't teach us to practice either. Just kind of gave us stuff and kept us quiet. x] So. You work well! Better than her and it gets to the point! xD;

fongmingyun In reply to dreamer15 [2006-07-23 03:30:32 +0000 UTC]

Lol *pets* hey, where do you think I learned the stuff. Classes, man. Classes. That's why I can post this info and all them anime CG I-learned-how-to-color-from-walkthroughs dorks can't MWAHAHHAAH. But lol, your into class forces you to practice said techniques?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dreamer15 In reply to fongmingyun [2006-07-23 04:49:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, yeah, I know. And what's wrong with learning how to CG through walkthroughs and tutorials, eh? EH?! ... I'm so not threatening in any way, am I? Meh. And force us? Riiiiiiiight. Some teachers might have but none of mine did. Don't know if that's good or bad yet. I'll tell you if I fail something...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fongmingyun In reply to dreamer15 [2006-07-23 16:17:46 +0000 UTC]

Lol. I mean, walkthroughs are great, but so few of them teach you color theory (which mind you, I still haven't got down right - I still use the wheel all the time).

Mew. I was thinking taking weekend courses at UArts in college if tey offered 'em.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dreamer15 In reply to fongmingyun [2006-07-23 17:24:13 +0000 UTC]

Color theory... I should learn that some time... I don't even use a wheel. Then again, I don't paint and that would be when it'd be essential, right?
As for weekend classes while in college, I don't know if they're offered. I don't think I can even take color theory, as I'm not a painting major.

XDD Nyahh~ yay <333! Finally the revealing of Woe's skillful ways <3333!!! XD..omp I used all those shading techniques...without knowing the name like classical shading and scrumbling..

X3 Can't wait to see the other sections too <333 *__* it's so informative and clear..you should make it a book <3333. XO Teach those other authors to stop writting useless pooo in their tutorials!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fongmingyun In reply to Erina [2006-07-23 03:29:12 +0000 UTC]

Lol. The names aren't really that important, Noa. XD But hey, it helps me keep them defined, so it'll make things easier to write in Parts II and III.

Ifnromative and clear? lol... I blame my actualyl taking english in high school and not Typ1ng lyK3 dIs. A book? Dude, lol, I'm NOTHING compared to =Cedarseed this is kinda subtle homage to her.

Awesome! This is so well-laid out and well-written - really detailed and informative and very very easy to read (of course - what else could we expect from a skilled writer to boot ). I can't wait to see the rest of the series! This is shaping up to be one of the most helpful tutorials I've seen for working in this medium. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fongmingyun In reply to maiji [2006-07-23 03:27:49 +0000 UTC]

holy shit. *bows* lol. I still fip out when you fave/comment on my stuff. XD especially since this is me just semi-winging it on a first try.

My only thing with writing is basically "write like you talk, but make sure your grammar's actually correct" ... it makes things understandable and on-the-level.

Lol. I haven't seen ANY tutorials on this medium and it bugs me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

maiji In reply to fongmingyun [2006-07-23 03:55:23 +0000 UTC]

LOL, why? XD;;; And if this is you semi-winging it, it's even more impressive xD I've tried doing tutorials so many times in the past, and I always lose focus/patience. And I subscribe to that writing philosophy as well! xD It's just so nice to see a well-executed tutorial with good grammar and spelling (I'm a nitpicker for that sort of thing, what can I say) being the icing on the cake.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fongmingyun In reply to maiji [2006-07-23 04:05:28 +0000 UTC]

well, i "planned" it out before I started, but the whole me actually doing it was a whim. I spent ten minutes or so plotting out how I would divide ths ections, but otherwise, it's mainly winging (and some spell-checking).

I'm surprised I've gotten this far. I thought I would lose my patience, too. But I just kept working ahead. It's hard, too, especially since I'm sharing computers with my mom, so it's ahrd to get time on the machine. But man, the internet should foster proper grammar. I can't belive that when I was 12, i thought it was cool to use 'u' in place of 'you'.
