Cleaning up helps a lot, actually. But about 70% of the time, I don't do it. XD

Awesome. You know, this might be a lot of writing, but seriously, you convey everything very clearly. And this is what people need in order to grasp the concept and really understand it; you can't expect them to impart wisdom in a few scribbly points (as I've seen far too many tutorials try to do XD) Wonderful job, and the screenshots really illustrate your info well! ^^
And damn I am still envious of how neatly you can sketch XDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Aw, Maiji! Thank you. *bows* Lol. I was wondering if I should put, like, arrows on the screenshots to demonstrate the specific parts I was shading and stuff, but I was too lazy DX
It's not nheat, I reassure you yet again.

Maybe if you build pencil wings? Made out of...augh *think think* ...B-type? Because they're the hardest?

XD; H is the hardest.
Lol. I think pencil wings would sink...

Noooo...I had totally typed H but then replaced it with "B." Dammit. H = hard. H = hard. H = hard.

This tutorial is rocking. So young yet so awesome. You know how to rock that graphite. And monitor tracing? I've done it before but my arm just doesnt like vertical tracing. I emplore the window anyways. Bigger and just as close! Ahh, but the days of pencil are quiet ones. Paint is my friend now.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
fongmingyun In reply to TehEccoGod [2006-08-04 23:52:03 +0000 UTC]
I'm not that young! *dies and hides head* Lol, shit there are so many like child prodigies out there. Thanks for the compliment - I love your painting work, so i tmeans a lot.
Oh, my arm hurts all right after monitor tracing. It hurts a LOT. XD; Tracing that pic took me about two hours because I kept having to take breaks to untwist myself. My windows are unfortunately smaller than my monitor. :C
I'm gonna try to learn to paint digitally now... because real pain is expensive.

TehEccoGod In reply to fongmingyun [2006-08-05 00:07:26 +0000 UTC]
two hours??? i trace as little as possible as fast as possible. You have much more determination than I do.
haha, and good luck in the digi paint journey. if you get really amazing at it, transitioning to real paint later on should be eaassy. But it works the other way around as well. I certainly like color mixing on the puter better though. Has to be the hardest part of the real stuff. After watching all your money drain.

Yeah, usually, i sketch really messy and then trace for ages. XD; I sketch really messy.
Lol. It's a long journey I'm kind of scared to take. DX;

Psh, the writing goes into so much more depth than just a progression of pictures. Again, very nicely written. Anyway, it's really interesting to read - your method to pencils is a bit different to the approach I would use if someone were to put a pencil in my hand and say, "Go forth and make art with zee pencil." (Which is something I should really do soon...but I'm so fond of open canvas. <33 )

all I've been asking for for xmas/birthday for the past two years is a nice little light table... I've yet to get one :<
You're so much more organized about your shading than I am. Mine's always a messy mass of scribbles XD

fongmingyun In reply to eilid [2006-08-04 16:59:03 +0000 UTC]
Me, I figured I'd rather have a nice computer than a light table. So.... XD;
Lol. I'm terrible in that I'm always obsessing over my shading steps! It leaves no room for freedom.

Amazing. ^-^
How did you develop such a great 3-dimensional image of the human face in your mind? It seems to be one of the things that continually eludes me. X.x

fongmingyun In reply to goofoofighter [2006-08-04 16:56:04 +0000 UTC]
X3 Thanks! *heart*
Okay. That's... a lot harder to explain. Take a look at some pictures of faces with just bone and muscle. Take a look at people around you - see how their heads look at different angles. Try to understand how all the planes of the face - like the nose, the cheeks - come together. Try simplifying the face into different 3D shapes - a pyramid for the nose, spheres for the eyes. Then think about how light would fall along these shapes.

Yeah, that one is more practice with the mind than the actual shading. It's a bit more difficut. I may put up a "how to draw heads" tutorial, but I doubt it since it's an area I'm wearker in.
Haha, and if I didn't say it before, thanks for the fave. X3

It actually might be fun to watch people in the mall... o.o; And sit on the couches with my sketchbook and be all *SKETCHES LIKE MADDDDDD! XD* o.o 'Tis actually how my brother met the person who is now his boss. =o
Thank you! I will think about the shapes more... And keeping working on my extremities.
=O Would you ever think about a tutorial on hands?

______________D8 *gapes at your drool-worthy technique* I really like how you stenciled out the hair... the width variation with the pencil makes the outlines look SO dang fancy!
I really want to try out pencils now, but at the same time, I'm scared of failure. But I have to learn! Ahh, I'll see if my wallet can afford some basic tools right now... >3
As for the lightbox deal, I use my bedroom window and tape (I only use this for watercolors because I don't want there to be a lot of erased lines on the final product)! It gets a lot of sunlight as long as I'm not trying to transfer stuff at night. Drawing on a computer monitor and needing to turn sideways seems a lot more difficult... x__x Is that an old spare used just from lining purposes? I think doing it on my monitor might break something. *ouch!*
...and your hands are NOT fat!!
