I've been meaning to make one of these for a while, and I finally remembered to take screenshots along the way as I was doing my last drawing.

I hope this helps some people in learning some of the cool features in PaintTool SAI!

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment!

Enjoy!

yes! I'll use the same technique as I use for making the lineart- using the pen tool with the stabilizer setting turned on, it lets me make some nice sleek shadows.

nice work!
how do you ink your drawing? Do you use the linework (forgot the term) layer? or you trace it by hand?

I'm still new with the whole tablet thing... my lines get shaky and messy when I trace.. is there a special way for it, or do I just have to practice real hard O.O

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foogie In reply to artisticlunatic [2011-05-23 06:29:26 +0000 UTC]

I trace it by hand. I also have trouble with shaky lines, but the trick is to do somewhat quick lines- as it'll help smooth things out. for major lines, I'll often do a quick stroke over it like 20 times before I get one that looks perfect. (undo ftw!) lol

Plus, using the stabilizer setting in SAI almost completely eliminates shaky lines. XD

overall you need to get a really good feel for your tablet, and get comfortable using it. the more at ease you are with using it, the easier it is to get good results.

WoozieC In reply to ??? [2011-05-19 12:39:29 +0000 UTC]

How do I set the stabilizer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foogie In reply to WoozieC [2011-05-19 18:10:50 +0000 UTC]

lol, on the very top bar of settings on the screen, at the far right there's a dropdown list called Stabilizer... I usually set it at S3 or S4. If you can't find that, if you double click on the pen or ink pen themselves, a window will come up where you should be able to find it there, called Stroke Smoothing or Stroke Stabilizer.

This has been very helpful for me! Question though - did you put the eyes on a separate layer when making the line art? Or make a layer with the face?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foogie In reply to x-EBee-x [2011-05-19 02:37:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad!

When I do the lineart, the eyes and pupils both have their own layers. just makes it easier when it comes time to color the lineart!

This is so handy, I kept coming back for this. Now thinking, "Whatever, just faving it."
And the background is mind-moving, like a sunset or something.

the gradient color scheme is one of my favorite sunset gradients XD... I've used it in several of my drawings!

OMG you are awesome!! I had no idea that you could do clipping groups and things like that. I do have one question. I can't find the Stabilizer, I think I might have a different version... what would be the substitute?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foogie In reply to luckycyberbunny [2011-05-16 05:28:50 +0000 UTC]

XD thank you!

I'm not sure about a substitute... the stabilizer dropdown menu is in an odd place though, it's on the very top bar above the canvas... though if you double click on the pen or ink pen tool itself, you should also be able to set a stabilizer setting (Stroke Stabilizer) there too.

luckycyberbunny In reply to foogie [2011-05-16 18:55:58 +0000 UTC]

I figured it out!! Thanks!! Instead of being called stabilizer, it's just called smoothness XD

foogie In reply to nene7980 [2011-05-14 19:06:01 +0000 UTC]

it's just in my little scrollbox of tools (pen, airbrush, brush, watercolor, marker, etc.)... it's somewhat near the bottom of the list. If your version doesn't actually have it, here's a handy tutorial so that you can create it! [link]
