I've been meaning to make one of these for a while, and I finally remembered to take screenshots along the way as I was doing my last drawing.

I hope this helps some people in learning some of the cool features in PaintTool SAI!

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment!

Enjoy!

[link] I use the painterly use-age of SAI.
but this looks much quicker for doing line art and what not of that line

Thanks! I've tried SAI before but I just decided to try and get serious with it today! Then I saw this in the Daily Deviations and I saw the title and I was like, "thank God! "

A couple of questions though; how do you close the lines? And the Stabilizer doesn't work with non-pressure-sensitive tablets, no?

foogie In reply to aire73 [2011-05-14 02:38:03 +0000 UTC]

lol, I don't believe it would... I assume a non-pressure sensitive tablet would be like using a mouse almost (a pencil shaped mouse maybe lol)... I'm honestly not too sure, but there are other methods to work around not having the perks of a pressure sensitive tablet... Here's a tutorial based on the curve tool (it's like the pen tool in photoshop) which allows you to manually create soft lines with different widths using nothing more than the mouse: [link]

Closing the lines just means that when you draw an arm coming out of a sleeve, connect the line of the arm to the line of the sleeve, so you have a closed area that the paint bucket can fill... if there is a gap between the line of the arm and the line of the sleeve, the paint bucket will try to fill the arm as well as the area the gap opens up to. I hope that clears things up..

Yeah, it actually is like a pen-shaped mouse. *waves non-pressure sensitive tablet pen in the air* Thanks for the tutorial link though. I never bothered to learn how to use the pen tool in PS. Maybe this time around I'll be more industrious with SAI.

oh, yes... I understand you. But you mean you have to do it manually, right? I don't think there's a tool for that, lol!

Thanks again!

hahaha, no... just gotta be a bit diligent about it when you're drawing. XD I don't even really have to think about it anymore, I do it automatically. lol

Sandwhisper In reply to ??? [2011-05-13 20:53:35 +0000 UTC]

This is really helpful! But was how you got the pink hair to tint orange mentioned?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

foogie In reply to Sandwhisper [2011-05-13 21:47:58 +0000 UTC]

Using the 'preserve opacity' method on my base color layer for the hair, I selected the pink color and went to the RGB Color Slider, and changed the color to a similar hue-ed light orange, and then airbrushed (very low density, to keep it subtle) it on my base color layer. You can also do this via another clipping group layer directly on top of the base colors. you can also mess with different effects, like setting the layer to overlay or luminosity to get different looks. I hope this helps!

SpindaSpots In reply to Sandwhisper [2011-05-13 21:21:47 +0000 UTC]

I think for that effect you should use a yellowish colour for a light tone and a purplish-pink for the shadow. I used to do it all the time. I haven't done it in awhile, but I think that's how I used to do it.

Yeah I think its high time that popular programs where balanced on both machines
as its nothing agaunts pc's or macs its what your most comfy working with
I can work with both pc's and macs but mac is what I'm most comfortable with ^///^

foogie In reply to Lorna-RoseFoX [2011-05-14 19:08:05 +0000 UTC]

haha, I would rather use a mac, but I can't bring myself to pay that much more just for a brand. it's not practical for me, based upon what I use my computer for... lol

Lorna-RoseFoX In reply to foogie [2011-05-14 20:03:48 +0000 UTC]

Uni helped pay towards most of it and I paid the rest myself
there are ways you can get a mac with out too much money
also you can pay monthly.
At the moment I'm wanting a wacom tablet needs a intros 3 but will have to set up an ebay account as I'm not paying nearly £500 for a device.

I actually don't know of any- I've never done any work in that style, so my knowledge there is quite limited. XD I'm sure a bit of searching through DA's tutorials would find some good stuff though...
