Sebby idolized his daddy. He even grew up trying to dress and look just like him. Though, he's finally reached to the point in the story where he has surpassed his father's legacy. Symbolically, that's why he has grown his hair out.
As proud and impressed as his father would be to see who he is now, it would have never happened if his father didn't die the way he did. Just as Hermaeus Mora said, the sacrifices were painful but necessary... because everything happens for a reason! LOL! I haven't said that in a while! XD

Seb seemed so happy and safe in his sheltered world. Then he discovered how miserable and dangerous the real world was after losing his parents and being forced to enter it. Poor old boy.
