Description An illustration project for college where we had to create, draw, and than paint with 'wet media' a new cover to an existing book. While I selected a large range of books and created thumbnails for various covers, this one was selected and finished by my teacher/class. 'How to Be a Pirate' from the Misadventures of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III' aka the 'How to Train Your Dragon' book series. It not included but this image had to keep in mind where the text for the title/author/etc would go, as such the top half does seem a little 'empty'. (perhaps I should upload a version where the text would show)

The piece was a little too bright, and I should push the contrasts in the water a bit more, but really I'm proud of this piece, it took a lotta effort with little time.

While some are able to paint without a sketch, I would recommend painting over a sketch as it'll help you plan your painting out better. Β Start with the brightest/whitest colors first as its easier to darken a color than it is to lighten it in water color.

Brushes can be everything so make sure you have a wide variety & multiples of the same kind of brush you use most often for easy management.

I love how you drew the water. So much to see. Mostly water is just empty in drawings and photos, but this is really interesting to see. ^_^

Sailing to distant waters… I like the amount of details with many creatures. But my favorite still being 'The Alien Hominid', I find a good mix of straight lines and rounded shapes, around with some warm colors as well.
Your technique with brushes is really impressive, keep it up!

That's very interesting, and I'll have to make sure I note that in my next traditionally colored piece.

Okay. Not only is the book really good your cover is amazing. The colors give it more of Hiccup's personality and his little boat really does look like the Hopeful Puffin. However amazing I cannot help but notice the lack of everyones favorite little green dragon.

foolyguy In reply to FatesMyBitch [2010-08-02 01:15:04 +0000 UTC]

Your comment just leaves me speechless in how I could overlook something seemingly so obvious. The big thing here I think is that as I envisioned my own composition here I drew inspiration off of the original book covers themselves. They commonly only have one iconic piece of imagery and Hiccup in the cover. Toothless himself very rarely appears on the cover, which I think is what carried over into my mindset for my own fictional cover. (I think)

Still I think this piece could really be strengthened by the addition of such a easy to render character. Perhaps I should create an updated version of this piece...somehow.

FatesMyBitch In reply to foolyguy [2010-08-02 02:00:47 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't expecting you to like (is that the right term?) my comment so much. The covers for the books (I love the cover for hardcover on book 6) are great but I part of me always wants to see Toothless on them. But frankly, its more about the journey and the adventure (I was explaing to my cousins the appeal is that you don't always have to aim to be a hero or to look like a hero to do heroic things) and less about the dragon.

I actually prefer the books to the movie simply because. . . I love books and there is a lot more material to work with. I'd love to see what it would look like updated so please let me know if you decide to do so.

This is gorgeous!!

You're awesome for liking HTTYD before it was cool . I really love looking at art based on the books rather than the movie--it's a much bigger and kookier world!

The books are amusing, I'm really hoping some elements will continue to make it into future sequels of the film.

Still I really did love the movie, and this piece was made in my anticipation of its release in part. (I just love the work of Chris Sanders)

Holy snap, the last thing I was expecting to see when I went searching for "How To Train Your Dragon" art was this.

Because I see it every day on the third floor. o-o

And I've been thinking "Wow, that's so cool" while at the same time thinking "Oh my gawd I'm going to be doing that eventually".

How cool, another NIU student

Yah, was anticipating the movie's release well before the first trailer was even released. So when an assignment came along to draw your own vision of a book cover, I choose this series. I did a sketch for the original 'How to Train Your Dragon' book, however this one was chosen by my teacher. (Kim Martens)

Best of luck in your own endeavors!
