the early protectors of metru nui gathered together to fight the kanohi dragon although since the beast had been sealed away before, an earlier team of toa possibly led by or including Dume when he was a toa of fire must have existed. led by Lhikahn and formed of nidhiki, toa of air, two toa of water, naho and tuyet four toa of ice and three other toa of unknown element. after the dark hunter war nine of the eleven toa mangai were killed by eliminator while under orders from the false dume to seal the sea gates. beneath the great colloseum in metru nui there is a suva/shrine to the toa mangai where masks and weapons are kept (voporak would later take the kanohi vahi from this chamber). several landmarks on mata nui were named after this group including naho bay and the mangai volcano.
