Description Finally...

I didn't know that it is actually possible to create pictures in poster-size with a usual ballpoint-pen. Well, now I know...

The monster project is finished. Unfortunately I wasn't able to post the whole picture in one step, because deviantART doesn't support pictures above 10 megapixels. Therefore I had to divide the picture into several subpictures. This is like a "map" for the whole thing to understand the connections between the single parts. Just check out the links below to see the whole details.

I know that there are some weaker and some stronger parts in this picture. The problem with such enormous large deviations is to keep the quality level during the whole process. This isn't really difficult if you only work with digital media or did already perfectionize your style to a level, where it can only be improved on minor details any more. I had a lot of problems to make the parts fit together, because I am still working on my style. I've learned uncountable things about my shading technique, especially the different surfaces and interaction shadows. Therefore the earlier parts of the picture (have fun finding out which they are ) look much brighter and somehow worse than the recent parts.

I had a lot of fun creating those little pictures in the frames hidden all over the deviation. They are actually some kind of composition experiment, but in my humble opinion they make the picture look much more coherent. I've also tried to draw as many new characters as possible to give each part of the picture a touch of diversity.

The digital background is a combination between 6.1mp-photos shot with my digicam and several hours of handmade digital work.

Just to give you a light impression of the creation process:
This piece took about 350 hours of work, whereof not even 5 percent were digital. Ballpoint-pen pictures always take much more time than digital pictures, but in this case it was just a huge challenge not to give up and keep on sketching and shading.
The whole pictures were created on 38 DinA4-pages of usual printer paper (100g), not counting the uncountable sketch sheets I used to figure out how the whole thing will look like. 3 poor and (quite probably) innocent ballpoint-pens were killed while shading.

To find out more about the shading itself, please check out my ballpoint-pen tutorial, which also contains a (small) part of this deviation.

Thanks to everyone, who kept motivating me in the last 3 months. This picture wouldn't look the way it does now without you! (I think you probably know who you are and listing everyone of you would just take too much space )

Comments are highly appreciated, full-view is a MUST!
To find out more about my thoughts concerning this picture, check out the descriptions of the detail pages.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO FAVED AND COMMENTED THIS PIECE! AND OF COURSE TO PUNKROMANCE AND DHOLMS FOR THE SUGGESTION AND FEATURE AS A DAILY DEVIATION! IT'LL TAKE A WHILE TO REPLY TO ALL THE COMMENTS, BUT I'LL GIVE MY BEST YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

Thanks a lot! I'm not all the way satisfied with this piece, as the background isn't good enough in my oppinion, but it was nevertheless a great feeling to draw the last line

Thank you! Feel free to check out the detail pages linked in the description. A lot of detail got lost in the creation process, as the devART rules allow only pictures smaller than 10 megapixels.

It's probably a one-time-project, as the work put into this piece was really, really much. It isn't easy to motivate yourself working on such a big picture. But of course it's a great feeling to draw the last lines and finally finish

Yeah, and perhaps a bit empty too. It usually are when you've finished smth as large.

I think the level of detail is incredible. I'll definitely be coming back to this to gawp at it again...

Oh, and feel free to check out the detail pages by clicking on the links in the description. Unfortunately the picture was too big to be postet in its original size, which made disappear a lot of details. The detail pages have a higher resolution.

Thanks a lot - for the fave too, of course!
I have worked on this piece for about 2 complete months, using every free minute to add some more details to the parts. It came up to more than 30 pages of ballpoint-pen-drawings. I was surprised by the result myself, because I didn't put it together before all the parts were finished. And in addition to this, it wasn't planned to be that huge... Whenever I started sketching a new page, more and more ideas came spreading out of my head and I had to implement them all since I liked them so much.
It's always a pleasure to see how hard work pays off by visitors enjoying the piece. Thanks again!

Thanks! I'm actually not too proud of the composition, but more of the details The composition was the result of cutting the picture on each and every side as it was much too big to be postet in its original setting...

This is so incredibly amazing. All the little details, the entire world. I am stunned. I bet I can look at it for hours, trying to figure out what they are all doing and trying to see everything that is happening. I shall add this to my favourites right now.

Wow, I really appreciate that! Working for such a long time on one project is certainly connected with some kind of... well, expectation? At least you hope that it was worth all the work... Feel free to check out the links in the description. It'll be much easier to see the details. I had to reduce the size massively, since deviantART allows only pictures below 10 megapixels. This piece had about 30...

I love how you have combined the background (which looks almost abstract expressionist) with such an intricate forground. It really works for me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

forkfighter In reply to JonBeinart [2006-06-02 21:05:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! Actually I'm not really sure about it. As you can probably imagine, it was very hard to create such a huge background for this deviation. Therefore, I used very large photos and refined them with textures and very few lighting effects. But as I'm used to textures-only-backgrounds, this background seems to be a bit misplaces for my taste. I really should do a new one, but that would just take too much time...

Honestly, this gargantuan picture looks amazing. There is so much detail put into this piece. There is always something going on in one part of the picture. I believe that is the strength of this picture because the eye is forced to look and comprehend the events that happen in each portion. In other words, it forces the eye to literally stare at the piece for a long time to get the overall sense. The drawing and shading of "everything" are stunning. Considering the amount of effort and time put into this, I will have to applaud you.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

forkfighter In reply to Idiosyzygic [2006-05-30 10:37:07 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank you very much (for the fave as well, of course).
The reason why this project turned out that huge isn't just the fact that my other deviations are much smaller and I wanted to create something bigger. As I had new ideas with every new sheet which I shaded, I didn't stop after shading, but just started a new sheet as soon as the old one was finished. Only in the end I realized how huge the picture really was.
The approach to details depends on the fact that I like to have details in pictures when I'm searching for great art. It's always nice to see, if you discover something new every time you look at a picture. I don't really know if this is the best way to promote your pictures, because if you force the viewer to invest a lot of time into your pictures, he might stop looking at it in lack of time or simply get confused, but nevertheless it's a good way to get rid of all the ideas flying around in your head

I mean, really, I am not able to turn all my plans into pictures at this time, because if you start a new picture for every new idea, you'd soon get lost in all the projects.

Well, thanks again!

Yeah, it actually did I didn't really count, but all in all, it's probably around 300 hours for all the drawings including background. The problem with those detailed ballpoint-pen drawings is, that you can't finish anything fast, because the shading consists of so many single lines. I mean, I'm becoming faster, but it still is an endless process for one single sheet

Thanks a lot! I don't really know, I guess it's about 300 hours... I started work in the beginning of february and worked until the beginning of april. It can really piss you off working on a project like this, but somehow it's strangely attractive
New details and ideas occured all over the creation process, that's why it's actually so huge. It wasn't meant to be at first

forkfighter In reply to LilaMascara [2006-05-20 16:35:50 +0000 UTC]

I don't really know, I'm not really satisfied with the background yet. I'd like to have more details to it, to be honest. But my digital skills are not on the same level as my traditional skills, which makes it very difficult to create a background that really fits and has a detail level which would be satisfying.

Thank you very much!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

forkfighter In reply to s7eben [2006-04-13 17:24:39 +0000 UTC]
