Description Finally...

I didn't know that it is actually possible to create pictures in poster-size with a usual ballpoint-pen. Well, now I know...

The monster project is finished. Unfortunately I wasn't able to post the whole picture in one step, because deviantART doesn't support pictures above 10 megapixels. Therefore I had to divide the picture into several subpictures. This is like a "map" for the whole thing to understand the connections between the single parts. Just check out the links below to see the whole details.

I know that there are some weaker and some stronger parts in this picture. The problem with such enormous large deviations is to keep the quality level during the whole process. This isn't really difficult if you only work with digital media or did already perfectionize your style to a level, where it can only be improved on minor details any more. I had a lot of problems to make the parts fit together, because I am still working on my style. I've learned uncountable things about my shading technique, especially the different surfaces and interaction shadows. Therefore the earlier parts of the picture (have fun finding out which they are ) look much brighter and somehow worse than the recent parts.

I had a lot of fun creating those little pictures in the frames hidden all over the deviation. They are actually some kind of composition experiment, but in my humble opinion they make the picture look much more coherent. I've also tried to draw as many new characters as possible to give each part of the picture a touch of diversity.

The digital background is a combination between 6.1mp-photos shot with my digicam and several hours of handmade digital work.

Just to give you a light impression of the creation process:
This piece took about 350 hours of work, whereof not even 5 percent were digital. Ballpoint-pen pictures always take much more time than digital pictures, but in this case it was just a huge challenge not to give up and keep on sketching and shading.
The whole pictures were created on 38 DinA4-pages of usual printer paper (100g), not counting the uncountable sketch sheets I used to figure out how the whole thing will look like. 3 poor and (quite probably) innocent ballpoint-pens were killed while shading.

To find out more about the shading itself, please check out my ballpoint-pen tutorial, which also contains a (small) part of this deviation.

Thanks to everyone, who kept motivating me in the last 3 months. This picture wouldn't look the way it does now without you! (I think you probably know who you are and listing everyone of you would just take too much space )

Comments are highly appreciated, full-view is a MUST!
To find out more about my thoughts concerning this picture, check out the descriptions of the detail pages.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO FAVED AND COMMENTED THIS PIECE! AND OF COURSE TO PUNKROMANCE AND DHOLMS FOR THE SUGGESTION AND FEATURE AS A DAILY DEVIATION! IT'LL TAKE A WHILE TO REPLY TO ALL THE COMMENTS, BUT I'LL GIVE MY BEST YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

Thanks a lot I really appreciate that!

Well, actually the attempt itself is not so frightening. I started with very small parts of this picture, but every time I finished a piece of it, I had new ideas for other parts. So, it's basically more a "piece by piece"-work then actually a planned, oversized picture.

I'm not too sure if I'd manage to do something like that again, since it's really annoying to have to work on the shading for such a long time. The only motivation you can obtain through this, is by finishing small parts, which makes them look much better, thus driving you to finish the picture...

Thank you very much! I doubt I would have the tolerance to do such a picture again right now, but back then I had a little more time and motivation. I actually didn't plan to make it that huge, though, it just developed during the process and whenever I finished a part, a new idea came on my mind.

I'm still not satisfied with the background. But I don't think I'm going to pick up work on this piece again. It's just a chapter in my past and I want my art to develop...

Woah...first off congratz on the dd, I think it is well deserved. You know, this is the kind of work that I can just spend days looking it. Everything you've drawn in it is so fascinating. All your funky little characters and settings are a pleasure to look at. Very good work! Yeah, you do still need some work on your backgrounds but it is really just a minor distraction from a pretty much perfect piece. Just keep at it and you will get there in time.

forkfighter In reply to TheTrashCaretaker [2006-11-09 18:34:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot for the comment! The problem is: I just started to study molecular biotechnology at the university, that means I won't have much time to improve my drawing style in the next months and probably years. I'll have to do fast drawings...
The backgrounds in my recent works are pretty much what I want them to be, I think I'm quite close to a technique that is fast and looks nice...

Hey, thanks a lot!
To be honest, I'm not really satisfied with the whole piece, but I definitely am with the traditional part of it. The background isn't good enough in my opinion, except the bottom part, where you can see all those cobwebs. I just needed a solution that doesn't take too much time, but nevertheless doens't look too bad neither. It didn't really work, but it's better than nothing

Love the attention to detail in this, the ink-work is beautiful. There's so much to look at! I really like the random signs, like 'beware of elks' and 'popcorn is war' Amazing work.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

forkfighter In reply to crashingwave [2006-09-05 00:35:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! It's not really ink, it's a ballpoint-pen drawing. I can't work with ink, it always starts to smear...
The good thing with ballpoint-pens is that you can make the shading really, really detailed. Of course that costs a lot of time, but it also gives you the possibility to add more and more details while already shading, because until one whole page is finished 8 hours can pass.

Detail in general is the basic element of my kind of art. I am convinced by the idea, that only details can force a visitor to really look at a piece and not just scratch the surface. It's a great feeling to see that it turns out tas a daily deviation

If you want to know more about how to create good ballpointpen-drawings, check out this link [link]

All you have to do to get better is to practise. I mean, yeah, it sounds just too trivial to be true, but that's basically it. You should look at some of my pieces I did 3 or 4 years ago. They look disgusting. But after realizing that a ballpoint-pen is absolutely my kind of medium, I practised a lot and learned how to shade. It's not a really far way from that point to this picture, if you have already worked with a pencil.
