Description
My entry for round 51 of IDW at ConceptArt.org, with the topic of sniper rifles. This was also the winning entry, with 41% of the vote!I probably spent as much time researching as actually working on this, and I pulled out most of the tools in my arsenal. Started from early sketches in PS, taken to Illustrator for refinement and streamlining, pulled into Maya for perspective reference on the first-person shooter angle and then finalized in Painter.
The composition is a bit more cluttered than I'd like, but my objective was to show as much of the design process that went into this as I could reasonably fit.
Overall I'm pretty happy with the outcome, though I'd like to go back and work on a fully painted version of it alone. It definitely went through some of the best streamlining I've done to date and it's up there on my list of personal favorites.
Timeframe: A bit under a week.
Tools: Illustrator CS2 / Photoshop CS2 / Maya 8.5 / Painter IX

I can't see the writing - what is the red orb ahead of the butt stock? a powered gyro?

A year late perhaps, but... Yep. Serves to stabilize the rifle when utilizing it's monopod stand.
