Is there any significant difference between a clipping layer and a mask layer?

I seem to get the same effect with layer mask in the shading with or without multiply, whats the point?

Thank you for making this tutorial. It was easy to follow, and I did it right on my first try, which is rare considering English is not my first language xD

Do you lower the opacity at all for this image after you did the multiply?
Thanks for the tutorial!

On this picture, I don't think I did. I do occasionally play with opacity from time to time though.

Ooooookay...my sai must be broken because ctrl clicking doesn't do anything. Just changes the pen icon to the plus thing and nothing happens.

forte-girl7 In reply to Mowf [2015-01-04 13:43:56 +0000 UTC]
You ctrl+click the thumbnail image of the layer to select the full contents of that layer, not on the canvas itself.

That's what I was doing but nothing happens. Not sure why.

I just dont understand why people use masks. Is there something special? Because I can do the same with overlay and spare myself the selcting-trouble.Β

One more thing. If you make the layer Luminosity instead of Multiply, it makes for really nice highlights. I used this tutorial and that aforementioned trick to make my latest submission. So I say thanks, forte-girl7 and BechnoKid.

Oh yeah, that's also how I do highlights too, except I use Overlay most of the time. : )

I don't think you can select multiple layers in SAI - yet. Apparently there's a version 2 coming out soon that will support that, plus many other things : )Β

Right it think I understand. So basically its a bit like clipping group?

Allonsbro [2013-08-20 15:48:34 +0000 UTC]
Question: Up until now, I've just used a normal layer at 40-50% opacity in between my lines coloring layers. I use a color for my shadows that is a bit darker than the color the shadow is over. What is the difference between what I have been doing and this method? Are there any added benefits to doing it this way, like being able to do different kinds of shadows?
π: 0 β©: 1
forte-girl7 In reply to Allonsbro [2013-10-24 01:31:30 +0000 UTC]
No, that's fine. If you look at one of my other tutorials (this one, I believe: forte-girl7.deviantart.com/art⦠I say you can fill in the proper ares with just a darker colour instead of multiplying the shading layer over it. Doing it that way is just a quick and easy way to do it. Also, the reason for using a mask is just to keep things from going outside the lines, to keep it neat and whatnots

Hmm, I have a question. What works better this mask method or the Clipping group method? Aren't they both masks?

yeah, it does that instead

forte-girl7 In reply to SoylentRobot [2013-06-11 21:25:19 +0000 UTC]
Okay, that's basically the same as the marching ants. If you select a tool that isn't any sort of Selection Tool (wand, lasso, select pen, etc), then it should turn to marching ants

i have maybe a dumb question - but what's the difference between mask and simply new layer in clipping group?
i never used masks in my entire life, and i'm willing to give it a shot, but i just don't know what for.
